12 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, August 9, 1989 SPORTS Many of last year's high school stars continuing in college By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer With the 1989 High School fall sports programs less than a month away, one might wonder just what plans last year's fall senior ath- . letes have in store. A survey of these athletes whose names appeared regularly in the media in 1988 turned up some surprising statistics. Those 1988 Fall athletes who graduated in June from either Lake-Lehman or Dallas High School were much more than athletes. Most were also top academic students, the majority of whom will attend col- lege this year, many on academic or athletic scholarships, or both. Seven of the Lake-Lehman graduates, who have committed themselves to higher education by way of scholarships or grants- ~ in-aid are Len Annetta, four year varsity football and basketball player, who will attend Bloomsburg State University. Len, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Annetta, was an honor student and was sought by many schools before deciding on Bloomsburg. Stanley Simms, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Simms, and a tal- ented player will attend Clarion where he plans to play football and Chris Engel, who played var- sity football and baseball at Lake- Lehman, will attend Penn State Main Campus to play baseball. It is our understanding that Chris, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Engel turned down a scholarship to Bucknell to play football in order to go out for his first love, base- ball. Scott Shafer, who graduated from Lake-Lehman, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Shafer, waited a year before picking up his schol- arship to play football at Mans- field State University. Reb Michaels, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Michaels, will attend Temple Unviersity, on a scholar- ship, where he hopes to play foot- ball. Like the other seniors Rob is a top honor student. Rich James, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard James, who excelled in both football and baseball at Lake- Lehman, plans to attend Wilkes College where he has opted to play baseball. Wilkes College does not give scholarships but they do offer Grants-in-aids to students who excel academically and athletically. Frank Coslett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Coslett, will attend East Stroudsburg but will sit out this fall and red shirt until his sophomore year. The Lake-Lehman 1988 senior football players received more than $100,000 in scholarships in addi- tion to grants. 12 FROM DALLAS WILL CONTINUE SCHOOLING Twelve of the 18 senior football playes who graduated from Dallas High School in June have decided to continue their education, atleast 12 that we were able to confirm. Scott Horoschko, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Horoschko, has been accepted and will receive a grant- in-aid to Delaware College where he plans to play football and major in agriculture. Jerry Ogurkis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Ogurkis, will attend Millersville University where he plans to major in crimi- nal justice and also play football. Ogurkis also excelled in wrestling. Jim Lister, son of Mrs. Angela Lister, received a grant-in-aid from Wilkes College where he plans to major in business administration as well as play football. Lister also excelled in soccer at Dallas for several years. Ron Post, son of Ronald Post and Joann Post, received a schol- arship to Ithaca College where he plans to major in political science. He also plans to play football. Post was also an outstanding wrestler at Dallas. Jay Cherup, son of John Cherup, has accepted a scholar- ship to Wyoming Seminary where he will plan to continue his educa- tion prior to attending an Ivy League college. Shawn Ruth, son ofMr. and Mrs. Harold Ruth, will attend Far- leigh-Dickinson where he plans to major in business adminstration and he also hopes to play football. Other football seniors who have decided where they will continue their education are Mark Paczewski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Paczewski, outstanding player, who has registered at Wilkes College but is undecided whether or not he will play football although he is leaning toward doing so; Scott Starbuck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Starbuck, an honor stu- dent will attend Bloomsburg but is undecided about his major; John Gregg, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gregg, who finished his senior year with a 4.0 average, fifth in his class, and had a 3.8 average for his high school years. He plans to attend Penn State Main Campus and major in engineering. Seth Roskos, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Roskos, an honor roll stu- dent with a 3.5 average or better, will attend Grove City College where he plans to major in engineering. Ralph Rostock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rostock, also an honor stu- dent, will attend Scranton Univer- sity, where he plans to major in computers. Philip George, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter George, also a high academic student, decided to en- list in the United States Navy and continue his education while serv- ing his country. He enlisted and left for serviceJuly 11. He will continue his higher education and complete whatever is necessary when dis- charged. Other seniors who participated in Fall sports and have continued their education are five members of the Dallas High School soccer team. Mike McDermott, son of Mrs. Camille McDermott, will attend Penn State University where he plans to play soccer. Dale Morris, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Morris, an honor student, will attend Wilkes College where he will major in electrical engineering and also hopes to play soccer. Matt McQuaid, unfortunately has moved from the area but has planned to attend college and play soccer, if possible. Tom Shone, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Shone is continuing his edu- cation at Penn State Main Campus where he plans to major in busi- ness administration or economics and possibly play soccer. Jonathan Ursiak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rich- ard Ursiak, will attend the local campus of Penn State University where he plans to major in busi- ness administration and also play soccer. Lake-Lehman Coach Ray Den- nis was out of town but according to information we were able to obtain, there were only two seniors on the Knights soccer team, Al Manzoni, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Manzoni, who will attend Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus to major in engineering. Manzoni was a top academic student. The other senior was Eric Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Smith, who will attend Kutztown State University. Ericis a straight A student but has not yet decided on his major. He does plan to play soccer. Two seniors who excelled on the Dallas field hockey team were Sue Wells and Juliann Orlowski. Sue, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wells, will attend Bucknell where she plans to major in biology and also play field hockey. Juliann Orlowski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Orlowski, will attend Vil- lanova University. Senior Tracy Hunter also played field hockey but she will attend College Misericordia on a scholar- ship where she plans to play soft- ball. Tracy is the daughter of Karen Hunter and Harry Hunter. Senior field hockey players from Lake-Lehman who plan to attend college are Karen White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph White, salutatorian of the class, who plans to attend the University of Penn- sylvania; Carolyn James, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman James, who will attend Old Dominion on a scholarship and plans to play hockey and Julie Hess, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Hess, will attend Syracuse University on a full scholarship where she plans to play field hockey. The senior athletes of the Fall boy's cross country team at Dallas High School had some outstand- ing runners during their last sea- son which enabled the boys to win districts and also place second in the state competition. Not only were these boys excellent athletes but top academic students as well. Hugh Mundy, son of Atty. and Mrs. Hugh F. Mundy, not only ran in the cross country competition but also took the gold medal in the boys state track competition. An excellent academic student, Hugh will attend Notre Dame University. Jared Samuel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Samuel plans to attend Uni- versity of Delaware. Both boys plan to continue their running. John Aston, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Aston, will go to Shippensburg but is not certain what he will pursue as his major. He also plans to continue running as does Jamie Strange, son of Jane Griffin, who will attend Penn State's Main Campus. Jamie decided tobecome a member of the ROTC while in college but he also hopes to run. Walter Fader, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Fader, an excellent stu- dent, will attend Lehigh University where he plans to major in engi- neering. Like his high school team- mates, he plans to continue run- ning in college. Michael Dzanko, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dzanko, has received a full schol- arship to Juniata College and was among the students Juniata sent on a summer trip to England. He hopes to continue running cross country, if at all possible. Jim Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. Monty Evans, was also an honor student and will attend Wilkes College, where although they do not have cross country, do have track in which he hopes to participate. A large percentage of athletes are continuing their education this Fall and most of them are high school students who participated in the athletic programs of the school. A wise choice, perhaps, since in order to participate in sports at the local schools the students must keep their marks above average. : The students names are only those who participated in Fall sports since it is that time of the year. There are many more con- tinuing their education who par- ticipated in winter and spring programs, so when athletes are publicized it appears so, too, are the academic students and top students at that.
