The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, June 7, 1989 5 Shawn Murphy, Sister Finley honored Police report Two local women were among the four area women, who were presented with the Annual Path- finders Award at the 1989 Luzerne County Women's Conference last Saturday held at the Wilkes-Barre Campus of Penn State University. Sherry Martin, chairperson of the Pathfinders, presented the awards to Shawn Murphy, Dallas; Sister Mary Siena Finley, Dallas; Harriet McGeehan, West Hazleton and Audrey W. Spence, Wilkes- Barre. The women who receive the annual awards are selected be- cause they have challenged the traditional assumptions of women's role in society and have helped improve the quality of life in Luzerne County. Mrs. Murphy is president of the Pennsylvania Women's Cam- paign Fund, that contributes fi- nancial support to women run- ning for office, president of the Children and Youth Board, presi- dent of Planned Parenthood of Pennsylvania Affiliates and vice Levitsky tops in electonics meet Tom Levitsky, Dallas, a 1987 Associate Degree graduate of Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus who continued his education at Penn State Capital College in Harris- burg, won first place in the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Elec- tronics Engineers) student branch senior design project contest. Lev- itsky shared the award with San- dra A. Mayers of Wilkes-Barre. The IEEE is an internationl organization of professionals and students in the electrical engineer- ing field. Each year the student branch at the Harrisburg campus holds this contest which is judged by professors and professionals from local industries. AThe award winning project, a Home Energy Usage Monitor, rec- ords detailed information about energy usage habits. Measure- ments are stored in a microcom- puter which then allows access for computation of predicted monthly electric bills or for other electric company purposes. Levitsky received an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology (2EET) from Penn State Wilkes-Barre in 1987. Last month he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engi- neering Technology. Levitsky has accepted a posi- tion as electrical engineer with Phasor Corporation of Shavertown. UNDERGRADUATE CREDIT COURSES Shawn Murphy president of Community Services for Planned Parenthood of North- eastern Pennsylvania. She has also contributed through membership to the Rural Health Board of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Dallas and Montes- sori School Boards, Project Up- ward Bound, and Malabar Drug and Rehabilitation. Sister Finley is founder and executive director of the Ethics Institute of Northeast Pennsylva- nia, a non-partisan forum that exchanges ideas and explores ethical issues through workshops, lectures and conferences. an Eth- icical Resource Center, institu- tional consultation and continu- ing education programs. She has been on the faculty at College Misericordia for more than 15 years and has received the Distinction of Devoted Service to the cause of Human Welfare award, and the Sister of Mercy award. Neither Sister Finley nor Mrs. Murphy were aware they were to be recipients of the award until the day of the conference. Murphy was also the coordinator and leader of one of the workshops at Saturday's Conference, which was termed a success by the confer- ence committee leadership. She said thaton May 23, her pickup truck was struck while parked in front of her residence and damage was done to the driver's door. LEFT ACCIDENT SCENE A blue Toyota operated by an unidentified male crossed over the center double yellow lines and struck a Chevrolet driven by Ch- ester John Dragon, Jr. of Harveys Lake, head-on. Patrolman James Martin said that both vehicles stopped after the accidentbut when Dragon went to contact police, the driver of the Toyota took off. Inves- tigation is continuing. JEEP RUNS OFF ROAD On May 16, Patrolman Martin was called to investigate an acci- dent on Huntsville Road where he found a 1988 Jeep in a ditch. He later found the name of the opera- tor of the Jeep, Carla Mack of Nanticoke. GOLF CLUBS STOLEN John Murray, RD 4, Dallas, reported May 25 to Patrolman James Drury that golf clubs and golf bag valued at $1,063 were stolen form his car. Murray told Patrolman Drury that his ‘car was locked but the driver’s window was down about halfway. DALLAS TOWNSHIP TWO-CAR CRASH Wendy Lee Bolton, RD 1, Dal- las, was driving south on the Old Tunkhannock Highway, June 6, when police said she struck a Volkswagen driven by Charles Taylor, RD 1, Dallas. Bolton told Patrolman Jack Appel that she did not see Taylor traveling east on Alderson Road until the impact occurred. Bolton was cited for failing to stop at the stop sign and removed by ambulance to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for treatment. PURSE, GEMS MISSING Mrs. Mary Ann Spencer, Dal- las, reported May 30 to Patrolman Jack Appel that while shopping she left her purse on the checkout counter, and then drove to Noon Service Station for gas. When she went to pay for the gas she found her purse, containing a $2000 starburst diamond and $100 in cash. Investigation is continuing. BOMB THREAT AT DALLAS HIGH SCHOOL Nancy Nelen, office worker at Dallas Senior High School, re- ported to Dallas Township police that on May 19, a male called the school and said “There is a bomb in the school”, and hung up. Nelen said that she thought the call had come from within the school. A search by school employees found noone. Police are investigating the call. INSULATION STOLEN Richard Matthews, construc- tion worker for Hopson Specialty Systems, reported May 29 to Pa- trolman Wayman Miers that 26 bundles of insulation were re- moved from the construction site of Commonwealth Telephone Company. Matthews told Miers that the missing insulation was valued at $786.50. KINGSTON TOWNSHIP DISORDERLY CONDUCT Anthony M. Powell, 1413 Mark Drive, Wilkes-Barre, was arrested June 4, 3a.m. by Patrolmen Robert Weiss and Robert Parrish for dis- orderly conduct, terroristic threats, publicdrunkenness, harrassment, loitering and prowling. ARRESTED FOR DUI On June 1, Patrolman Robert Weiss arrested Stephanie Kane, 60 Shoemaker St., Forty Fort, for driving under the influence on Route 309, Kingston Township. DUI ARREST Patrolman Robert Weiss ar- rested Kenneth G. Shefler, Jr., Cook Street, Dallas, June 3, on Carverton Road, Trucksville, for drunken driving. CAMERA, STEREO ITEMS TAKEN Patrolmen Michael Moravec and Frank Ziedler invested a bur- glary May 31, reported by Maria Dubiel. Items stolen included a disk player, 35mm camera and accessories, compactdiscs, graphic equalizer tapes and headphones for a total of $3,000. Invesitgation is continuing with police waiting for a fingerprint report from the State Police. CAR SET ON FIRE On June 3, Patrolman Walter Davis investigated a case which proved to be arson. A 1987 Pontiac was found burning at a shale piton Bunker Hill Road, Trucksville. The car was owned by Bernard C. Fronczkewicz, 739 North Walnut St., Luzerne. Investigation is con- tinuing.
