DENMON Staff Writer The Lady Mountaineers of Dal- las rebounded from their 13-4 pounding by Pittston Area last Wednesday and defeated Berwick 10-2 Thursday afternoon to stay in the AAA West Division race behind the 7-0 Patriettes and 6-1 Warri- ors. The Lady Mounts also edged by Bishop Hoban 2-1 Monday af- ternoon at the Dallas field when Melanie Langdon drove out a run- winning single with two out in the seventh that scored Sue Wells. “Our girls have to get through this week,” said Coach Jay Pope. “Tunkhannock is a better team than their record indicates. They have been in every game during the first half but have had some tough breaks. They are a very competitive team. “The first time out we defeated Wyoming Valley West 10-O but their pitchers were giving up a lot of walks. They have gained control since then and lost their last game by only two runs. We will have to play good ball against them this Wednesday when we play them on our field. Friday we play Hanover and they are also a very competi- tive team. We can't afford to let up on any of these teams,” Pope said. Pope said he thought his girls played one of their best games this season against Bishop Hoban last Monday and against Berwick Thursday, the offense came to life getting 12 hits, three of them extra base hits by Holly Bachman, in- cluding a homerun. SE ; “Pittston’'s game was a night- mare,” Pope said. “Pittston played extremely well while our girls did nothing right. We have a better club than the score showed.” Pope said he expects Dallas games to improve the second half. The Mountaineers’ games have fallen in such a way due to weather and special events that the other teams have been able to scout the district champs very closely and those teams have been well pre- pared. “With Pittston now in the lead, some of the pressure should be off our girls and I believe you'll see a better club than in the first half,” Pope concluded. Despite the two losses, pitcher Laura Poynton has been pitching consistently and has one of the lowest earned run averages in the AAA division and with the excep- tion ofthe Pittston game gave up very few hits.
