The three day event, sched- uled for May 17, 18 and 19, is expected to draw upwards of 18,000 children into downtown Wilkes-Barre. This is the second 7 year the city has hosted the Festi- | val which gives kids a chance to see world-class theater without traveling the long distances to ‘| major cities. Wilkes-Barre's festival was the largest of its kind in the entire United States, last year and festi- val coordinators credit much of that success to the more than 300 volunteers who helped out. ~ Volunteerdirector, Kathy Flack, 4 says needed again this year are: ushers for the six theater sites, PLANNING CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL - Standing, Jean Ferrara, Festival staff; Susan Davis, Festival Director; seated, Kathy Flack, Volunteer coordinator. Children's Theater Festival |seeks volunteers for May crossing guards, instructor for ; PLAYWORKS (a panorama of arts and crafts), supervisors for lunch areas and staff for the lost and found and information booths. Flack says, last year senior citizens played a major role in making the Festival run smoothly and she is hoping the various | senior groups will be involved again this year. She is also asking the local men’s organizations to help out unloading buses and setting up outdoor seating areas. In all, an estimated 400 volun- teers are needed to insure a safe, happy time for the thousands of children who will be walking Wilkes-Barre streets during the Festival. Memorial Highway, Shavertown 675-1191 Back Mountain Jaycees plan membership drive The Back Mountain Jaycees announce that two local business professionals have accepted their invitations to join the chapter. As part of their annual Spring Mem- bership Drive, the local chapter is actively seeking new members. Ms. Diane Dimito of Kingston recently joined the Back Mountain Chapter during the membership drive. Ms. Dimito is associated with the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company and its training division at the Salem Township Steam Electric Plant. Ms. Dimito accepted her membership invitation at a recent statewide Pennsylvania Jaycee Board meeting in Reading, Pa. Prior to joining the local chap- ter, Ms. Dimito was active in many Jaycee activities. Mr. Robert Spangler of Plymouth has also accepted his invitation to become a member. Mr. Spangler has played a very active role as a member of the nationally ranked Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Jaycees. He accepted his membership invi- tation at a Membership Nite Social recently held at Hughie-O's in Dallas. Mr. Spangler is employed by Goodwin V.W. Porshe-Audi Motor Group in Larksville. The Back Mountain Jaycees will conduct a membership drive throughout the month of April. The local Jaycee chapter is ranked among the top chapters in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and has continually played an active role in the Wyoming Valley community. The Jaycees are a community oriented leadership training organi- zation that is open to.men and women from 21 to 40. Acrylics by Thelma Russ on display at United Penn office Paintings by artist Thelma Russ are on exhibit at the United Penn Bank, Dallas. The acrylics are Impressionistic in style and there are examples of both impasto and aquarelle techniques. Russ has studied painting with Sr. Vincent de Paul of Emanuel College in Boston; with various instructors on Long Island; at the University of Toledo Museum School, Toledo, Ohio; with Judy Lieberman at the Somerset County College, New Jersey; and with Sue Hand, Dallas. She is a member of the Wyoming Valley Art League. She exhibits with the League as well as in Imagery Invitational Art Exhibits in Dallas. Mrs. Russ has traveled exten- sively, having visited various places around the world including Mo- rocco, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bul- garia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal and Spain. She and her husband, Dan have moved 18 times in their marriage. They now reside in Shavertown in a house designed by Mrs. Russ. They are the parents of two grown children, Daniel, a resident of New Jersey and Dan- ise, now with her husband in Germany. In addition to her painting schedule, and her volunteer work at the Back Mountain Memorial Library, Russ enjoys sewing and gardening. The public is invited to view the Russ exhibit in the bank lobby through the middle of April. It may be viewed during regular business hours. Dallas Brass ensemble to perform at Penn State April 11 The Dallas Brass, a nationally acclaimed group will perform on Tuesday, April 11, at 8 p.m. in the Hayfield Community Room, at Penn State Wilkes-Barre in Lehman. This concert is the fifth in a series of the Hayfield Cultural Events, sponsored by the office of Student Activities. This six-member group, has quickly developed a national repu- tation for their unique instrumen- tation and original arrangements. They perform a variety of musical styles including classical jazz, swing, and pop. The group maintains a hectic concert schedule, performing in over two states at approximately 150 engagements for the 1988-89 season and has opened for Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, Spyro Gyra, and performed on a Bob Hope Show in Vail, Colorado.
