Smith is unde- feated going into the state compe- tition with a 32-0 record.” Ogurkis, who went undefeated during the dual meet season in the Wyoming Valley Conference took first place in districts by pinning each of his opponents. In regionals, Ogurkis’ first op- ponent was Howie Miller of Par- kland, who placed third in his district. Jerry defeated him 7-4. In the semi-final Jerry met District 11's second place winner, Ross Nunemacher of Nazareth, who he defeated 6-4. “That meet was a close one,” Ogurkis, Sr. explained. “Jerry was behind 2-4 until the last minute when he reversed Nunemacher.” His final bout was with Rizzolino, who Ogurkis caught in a head hold and pinned = 1:42 into’the first period. “I'm doing well so far,” Ogurkis said. “I have had no injuries and the scheme of the tournaments has worked out well. Going into states in first place helps. “I saw Rizzolino wrestle up at Crestwood before the season opened. I wasn't wrestling then because of football, but when I saw him I knew I would end up wres- tling him somewhere along the line,” Ogurkis said. The young wrestler is looking ahead to this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Hershey knowing he has a tough competition ahead ofhim, and he plans to goinand do his best. ROLLAWAY SKATING CENTER Rt. 415, Dallas, PA | 675-4844 Lady Mountaineers softball team preparing to defend title By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer “We have good depth this year,” Dallas softball coach Jay Pope told The Dallas Post this week, when discussing his Lady Mountaineers chances this season. “Our great- est depth is in the outfield, where we have six or seven girls who could start on any team. We also have more power at the plate. “We are rebuilding on the left side because we lost three out- standing players through gradu- ation,” Pope said. Joyce Tinner at shortstop, Jill Urbanas, catcher and Chris Legins at third have to be replaced. We have four girls vying for the third base position; Randi Harvey, Tiffany Owens, Amy Burgerhoff and Sue Wells. They are all looking good.” Pope and his assistants, Yvonne Mould and Judy Harvey, have 22 girls on this season's softball squad, 13 of them returning lettermen. They are Patti Reed, Dena Reben- nack, Tracy Hunter, Holly Bach- man, Julianne Orlowski and Randi Harvey, seniors; Lynn Bednar, Laura Pounton, Stephanie An- drasko, Amy Burgerhoff, Wendy Hozempa, juniors and Melani Langdon and Molly Connolly, sophomores. The Mountaineers also have senior Sue Wells, a natural ath- lete, this season, who switched over from track. Wells can play either the outfield or infield. Other "The kids know that they have a title to defend and the other teams will be after them.” Jay Pope Dallas coach » sophmores on the squad are Ann Faulls, Kim Martin, Rachael Vin- celli, Tina Hite, Aria Pierson, Brenda Misson, Tiffany Owens, and Tanya Bailey. Although most positions are not settled at this date, Laura Poynton will anchor the pitching backed up by Patti Reed and Aria Pierson, who has been showing great prom- ise. That trio gives the Mountain- eers great depth on the mound. Patti Reed has been looking good at first base if she is not called on to pitch. Tracy Hunter will proba- bly play the outfield as will Wendy Hozempa. Holly Bachman is ex- pected to be one of three or four of the Mountaineers power hitters. Bachman did a great job at the plate last season for Dallas. Langdon is a tentative choice as catcher, since she has been mak- ing excellent progress in that posi- tion, and Molly Connolly is a tenta- tive choice for shortstop. “The girls have been working hard in practice and Yvonne Mould, my assistant is pleased with their attitude as is Judy Harvey, who has been working with the pitch- Field hockey seniors get awards The Lake-Lehman Field Hockey Mothers Club recently presented jackets to the senior members of the Field Hockey team. They have been giving us 120 percent and their attitude is excellent. They have worked day after day with no Dallas, PA Wednesday, March 15,1989 13 moaning or complaining, no carry- ing on, Pope said. HOBAN, TUNKHANNOCK, COUGHLIN LOOK TOUGH Pope expects Bishop Hoban to be real strong this season since they were tough last season and have nearly all of their girls back. Tunkhannock is always strong and Coughlin fields a strong team in any sport, according to Pope. Crestwood has a lot of hockey players on the team and they know how to win, which they proved during the hockey season when they won the district title. Pittston has everyone back but one pitcher and is expected to be strong. “The time hasgonewhenacoach could field his team feeling confi- dent it would be an easy game,” Pope explained. “In today’s compe- tition, all of the teams are competi- tive and any team can win on any given day. This season Lake-Lehman and 1 Meyers dropped back to AA so the Mountaineers will play them only in exhibition. Those games willnot count in the standings. The Mountaineers are in the 4 North Division of Class AAA and will open the season in April with Crestwood at the Comets field.
