DENMON Staff Writer “We were pleased with our win Friday night, “ Lake-Lehman Coach Rodger Bearde said after his cagers . 76-64 win over Dallas. “Any time you're able to defeat Dallas it's a great win. “Our two seniors, Len Annetta and Frank Coslett played well. Annetta did some excellent scoring and rebounding and Coslett was “also great on the boards.” The younger Knights kept their composure most of the game against Dallas which pleased Bearde. He was also pleased with the team’s defense. But the Knights missed too many free throws, going only 10 for 23 from the line. t Bearde said he will have them work at that during practice. “For their first game, they played well and Annetta and Coslett showed some good leadership on the court,” Bearde said. Saturday night against Bishop Hoban, the Knights started cold in the first’ quarter with Hoban outscoring them 10-7, and they had several turnovers in the second quarter. § In two minutes time, the Argents outscored the Knights 14-2 which gave them the lead to go on and win the game 73-54. “For the second time we missed too many free throws, going only Dallas basketball team will gain experience as they go BY CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Dallas basketball coach Clarence Ozgo has only three starters back this season so although he has 23 out for the team this year, only those three have experience-Randy Coolbaugh, Brett Weyman and Ray Russin. With Brett Gauntlett the tallest member of the team at 6-5, the Mountaineers will be one of the smaller teams in Division I. “We're not too concerned about the scores in the exhibition games,” Ozgo said. “The kids played well offensively but not as well as they should defensively. “They didn't play too smart against Wyoming Seminary, but eight of them have very little experience. We will be patient with them and bring them along. It's a matter of them growing up,” Ozgo explained. The young Mountaineers have one more exhibition game. That is with Northwest Tuesday night; then they open the season Friday night against Hazleton. “Hazleton is the team to beat in Division 1 this season with their center 6-5 Jeff Antolik among one of the best Division I prospects in Pennsylvania. They also have depth,” Ozgo stated. If Hazleton doesn't make it, Ozgo believes Coughlin is second and the biggest threat to Hazleton. The young Mountaineers have some tough games in Division I, but Ozgo said he and his assistant will bring them along and develop them. Experience is the best way to do that, he said. Ozgo hasn't seen Northwest but said he knows Pete Lanza is a good scorer. Pete had 33 points in the "We have to be patient with them and bring them along" Clarence Ozgo Dallas coach game with Tunkhannock Saturday night. ; “They have pride and are a well- coached team, it should be a good game,” Ozgo said. | Randy Coolbaugh was the leading scorer for the Mountainers in both exhibition games, hitting for 15 against Lake-Lehman and 19 against Seminary. Russin had 11 in the Lake-Lehman game but Gauntlett was second with 10. Strikes 'n' spares M. Faux walioped pins for 170-218-194 (582) and teammate J. Our kids hustled but they missed too many free throws," Bearde said. “It’s early in the season and we're making mistakes on running the offense but will keep working on that.” The Knights open with Northwest Thursday night, at Northwest. Bearde doesn't know very much about Northwest except that they lost four good shooters to graduation. The Rangers are small but quick; Pete Lanza is a returning starter and is an excellent shooter. Eric Miner and Bob Hough are also good. “They shoot a lot of three pointers so we will have to play a hard defense," Bearde said. The Knights have the advantage on size and they have two good leaders in Annetta and Coslett, who will have to control the boards and lead the younger members of the team until Rob Michaels returns to the lineup.
