POST {Wednesday August 10, Sports five runs on four hits. Eee TEP i JE RY Back Mountain Legion eliminated from tournament By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Back Mountain’s Scott Francis struck out 14 and walked only one in the Legion teams’s game with - Danville Friday, but the local boys - were unable to overcome the six runs Danville scored in the first ~ two innings. Danville jumped out to an early ‘1-0 lead in the first when Straughan ~ Lumpkin hit a homerun over the - centerfield fence at Schautz Sta- dium in Dunmore. The Back Moun- tain team came back in their turn at bat to take a 2-1 lead when Chris Engle singled and Don Spencer hit a two-run homer. Danville players turned the second inning into disaster for Back Mountain when they scored Their catcher went to first on a single but was forced out at second on a fielder’s choice. A single and a walk loaded the bases, then pitcher Jeff Strausser hit a homerun over "the centerfield fence to give Dan- “ville a 6-2 lead. Back Mountain scored two runs in the top of the fourth when Steve - Bogdon sent Francis home with a triple, then scored on Walt Kon- opke’s single. In the fifth inning, Martin places the local team came within one run when Gene Faulls was able to score on a Danville error. Francis held Danville scoreless after the second inning but his teammates had trouble with some close calls when they were up. Coach Jack Wolensky praised his boys, however, and commended them for they way they played throughouut the season. Wolensky said his team gave the game every- thing they had and he looked for- ward to coaching them again next year. “They’re a good group and most of them will be back,” Wolensky said. Back Mountain had advanced to the game with Danville by defeat- ing Moscow 19-8, Thursday, at the Dunmore Stadium. Chris Engle went six-for-six at the plate, knocking out two home runs, a triple, a double, and two singles, scoring four times and driving in nine runs. Engle did all that with a sore arm which he hurt in Wednesday’s game with Abing- ton when he threw a high curve ball in the fourth. Bob Ashworth, who pitched his first game since high school season, went all the way. Todd Sallo and Keith Schultz, two of . Wolensky’s starting pitchers and strong outfielders, had left for Flor- ida after Wednesday's games, leav- ing the Back Mountain team short on pitching. Ashworth got support from his teammates, however, who drove out 20 hits. Bogdon hit two doubles, Don Spencer had three hits, and Rick Jurosky had two. T.J. Perlis knocked out two, one a double, and Walt Konopke had two. The Back Mountain team avoided elimination on Wednesday when Schultz played a key role in helping his team defeat Montouursville 5-2 after the team had lost 6-4 to Abington earlier in the day in double elimination tournament play. Schultz drove out a double to send in the winniing run and pitched four innings in relief to take credit for the win.- He relieved Sallo and pitched the four innings striking out two and walking none. In the ninth inning Randy Cool- baugh came in and fanned two of the three men he faced. Earlier on Wednesday, Back Mountain had lost their first game in the touurnament 6-4 to Abington VFW. Both Wolensky and Asst. Coach John Konopki were ejected from that game when they disputed some close calls made by the offi- Wendy Martin rides in the Stock Seat Equitation competition in the Riding Ho 4-H Club Open Horse Show, Sunday. Wolensky’s protest came in the fourth inning when his team had a 4-3 lead. Abington’s Guy DeAngelo and Tom Mohan walked to lead off the inning. D. Petty hit a short single to center and center- fielder Todd Sallo threw to second to force out Mohan but the second base umpire called Mohan safe. Wolensky disputed the call and was ejected by the official. Abington went on to score three runs. Konopki was ejected in the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one man out, Back Mountain’s Bogdon tried to check his swing on a 3-2 count. The home plate official pointed to first apparently signall- ing Bogdon to take first. The first base official thought the home plate umpire had called for a ruling and he motioned Bogdon out. Catcher Steve Crounse dropped the ball and Bogdon ran to first. Crounse threw to first to throw out Bogdon and on the first baseman’s return throw Crounse tagged out Engle trying to score from third. Wolensky was upset over the officals’ calls but following the game he did not put all the blame on them saying his players still had their chances but didn’t come through when they need to with the key hits. Back Mountain 9-10’s win city championship The Back Mountain team won the Wilkes-Barre Recreations Board’s 10th Annual 9-10 Year Old Little League championship Tuesday by defeating Swoyersville 16-4 in the title game. Swoyersville got off to an early lead with four runs scored in the first inning. Back Mountain came back for three runs in the top of the second and moved out of reach when they scored six more in the third. John Oliver went all the way for the win, allowing only three Swoyersville hits while striking out five. Oliver, Carlo Santarelli, B.J. Brooks and Greg Bogdan each had two hits each as the Back Mountain team knocked out 13 hits in all.
