Lake-Noxen students win awards The above Lake-Noxen Elementary sixth grade students recently receive National Social Studies Olympiad awards for outstanding academic achievement.on a test given to students nationally. Outstanding scholars at Penn State Three freshmen students at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus were honored for outstanding aca- demic achievements in University- wide ceremonies held recently - at . State, College. Joseph Cunningham, of Exeter; Melanie Molnar, of Athens; Bradford County; and Scott Pearson, of Sweet Valley, were named recipients of Presiden- tial Freshman Awards. ’ The University-wide awards are presented annually to those under- graduate students who have carried full-time credit load and earned 4.0 grade point averages for the first semester of their freshman year. The three were among 89 Presiden- tial award recipients recognized by University President Dr. Bryce Jordan during a special honors convocation attended by Dr. James Misericordia Dean’s List Several area students at College Misericordia have been named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester. Students must earn 3.55 or better on a 4.0 scale to receive Dean’s List recognition. Twelve area students earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Local students are: Richard Bras- sington, Dallas, senior computer science-mathematics major; Nigel Fung-A-Fat, Dallas, a senior com- puter science-mathematics major; John-David Pallante, Shavertown, a senior history major; Mary Sue Rish, Dallas, a junior accounting H. Ryan, campus executive of BAyV and the executive officers of all 21 Penn State campuses. ° Melanie Molnar, 28, traveled to Sweden as an exchange student prior to graduating from Athens High School in 1977. She began taking college courses at the Penn State Northern Tier Center in Towanda in 1986, transferring to the Wilkes-Barre campus as a full- time student in 1987, where she was named to Who’s Who of American Junior College Students. She plans to transfer to Wellesley College in Boston in the fall to major in English or education. The daughter of John and Suzanne Knecht, Ms. Molnar resides in Shavertown with her daughter Laura, age 2. Seven seniors received diplomas. They were Gail Garnett, Craig Keisling, valedicto- rian; Carol Miller, salutatorian; Eric Pain, Mark Piercy, Carrie Rowlands and Joseph Shuella. Ebenezer Faith Christian School opened in 1978 with 31 students in grades kindergarten through fifth with Dr. E. D. Hettinger as pastor and Donald Vincent as administra- tor, The school grew to include ninth grade by 1985 and at that time, Rev. Thomas E. Buczowski, ‘became pastor and administrator. Since 1985, the school has added a complete high school preparatory program. Jeffrey Farnham is now the principal.
