That is what will be appearing in our display case at the library for the next four weeks, thanks to Jane Klem of Shavertown. Jane is work- ing at our front desk through the courtesy of the Office of the Aging and is an ardent lover of hounds, Irish Wolfhounds and Bloodhounds. The display case is featuring some of Jane’s collection of statues of these dogs. Jane’s interest in dogs began when, at the age of five months, she was riding a German Shepherd, and she has always had dogs as pets. She shows dogs at Dog Shows and has been showing Kerin, her Wolfhound, for five years and Kerin finished as No. 5 Wolfhound in the country. Now, we have a new dog, Cian, who is 10 months old, newly acquired, still in the learning stage, typical puppy, into everything. Jane is planning to train Cian to become a show dog beginning June 9. Bloodhounds hunt by scent and arethe only dog that trails and Wolfhounds hunt by sight only, never by smell. The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest breed of all AKC breeds. The display includes a large sitting brown bloodhound, a gift from St. Thomas 20 years ago; a Lladro creator bloodhound in a lying position, white with light tan spots; an Avon bloodhound pipe filled with after shave which is very old; a tiny white bisque porce- All You Can Eat All You Can Eat Senior Citizens ENJOY! A pewter one is sitting, falling on his front feet; his friend, Hudson pewter in a lying sprawled out position; and another with his head on a shoe, sleeping. The Bloodhounds smelling capacity is 150,000 times greater than ours. The Wolfhound moves very fast like a horse, all 4 feet off the ground when they move out. There is a large brown Wolfhound of china, made in England; a sm#™ black one is coursing, which was won by Kerin at a show in Canada; a Hereditie, made in Great Britain, a black puppy chewing someone’s slippers; and a special favorite wolfhound of stoneware just stretched out. I have trouble telling these dogs apart and Jane gave me a clue; smaller dog with long ears and a wrinkly face. Getting to know Jane Klem and her love for hounds and setting up this display is an educa- tion in itself. Visit hounds and flowers before June 22.
