Because of this lack of choice, we have rented some video movies that have become family favorites. That is, they are endlessly enjoyed by our four-year-old without caus- ing mental burnout in the grown- ups. Our top five selections are, in alphabetical order: ‘Lady And The Tramp’, “Mary Poppins’, “Return To 0z”, “Willie Wonka And The Chocolate Factory’’, and ‘‘The Wizard of Oz”. The animated classic ‘“‘Lady And The Tramp’ offers a dog’s-eye view of the world complete with songs performed by Peggy Lee. Children always seem to like animal stories and this cast includes an enterpris-: ing beaver and a trouble-making pair of Siamese cats along with the hero and heroine and their canine companions. And, of course, true puppy-love conquers all. ‘““Mary Poppins’’, which stars Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, is a delightful mixture of actors “and animation. It features many well-known songs (‘‘A Spoonful of Sugar”, “Step in Time’, ‘“‘Supercal- ifragilisticexpialidocious’’) and a number of unique dance sequences such as Bert with the penguins and the rooftop scene with the chimney- sweeps. “Return to Oz” is based on books written by L. Frank Baum another of whose stories was the basis for “The Wizard of Oz’’. Dorothy returns to Oz with her chicken Billina some months after her first trip to help her friend the Scare- crow. In this adventure, Dorothy meets some new friends (Tic Toc of the Army of Oz, the Gump, Jack the Pumpkin-head) and outwits some new foes (the Wheelers, Prin- cess Mombi, the Nome King). One of the real stars of this film is the animation and special effects. Por- tions of the story line and certain special effects could be scary to younger children. Gene Wilder is perfect as the eccentric Mr. Wonka in ‘Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Fac- tory”. This is the story of every kid's dream come true. Imagine being given a candy factory of your very own!! Along the way are some catchy tunes, fun-filled fanta- sies, and helpful messages about what happens to children who are greedy and spoiled. “The Wizard of Oz” is the 1939 film classic starring Judy Garland. The appeal of the story and the characters hasn’t faded after almost 50 years of watching Doro- thy and Toto on their quest only to find that ‘‘there’s no place like home’. “Over The Rainbow’’ heads the list of song standards from this movie. What I like most about the video rental concept is not only that it broadens our viewing experience.
