Beware of area road construction this weekend Motorists traveling this Memorial Holiday weekend should know there will be a few construction projects underway on Northeastern Pennsyl- vania interstates during the holiday weekend, according to Pennsyl- vania Department of Transporta- tion Construction Engineer Robert Doble. Doble says motorists should not find it a problem traveling the Interstates, however he has issued a travel alert to those planning to use the Interstate system. “We want to give motorists con- struction schedule information to allow them a choice when traveling Northeastern Pennsylvania Inter- states,” Doble said. The Interstate areas that will be under construction during the holi- day are as follows: 1. Interstate Route 380...Rehabili- tation of the Eastbound lanes on Interstate Route 380 between Dale- ville (Exit 5) and Gouldsboro (Exit 6) in Lackawanna County. The scope of work includes paving, drainage improvements, and the installation of guide rails. During the construction period, Eastbound traffic will be detoured onto the Westbound lanes and will be sepa- rated by a concrete median bar- rier. 2. Interstate Route 81...Construc- tion underway on seven miles of Interstate 81 between Route 29 (Exit 44) and Route 115 (Exit 47) in Luzerne County. The road resurfac- ing begins South of Bear Creek and continues to just South of Ashley near Exit 44. Traffic is being shifted to the Southbound lanes while crews reconstruct the North- bound lanes of Interstate 81. 3. Interstate 84...Work is set to resume on May 18, 1988 on joint rehabilitation in the Westbound lane of I-84 (Milford) and Exit 9 (Lords Valley). Traffic restricted to one lane at the worksites during construction, Through traffic will be maintained. Operation C.A.R.E. in force The Pennsylvania State Police is joining a nationwide education effort with OPERATION C.A.R.E., Combined Accident Reduction Effort, to call on motorists to “Start a Habit for Life and Buckle Up.” May 23-30, 1988 is Buckle Up America Week and Colonel Ronald M. Sharpe, Commissioner, Pennsyl- vania State Police, is urging the motoring public to renew a spirit of cooperation with law enforcement agencies around the country who have joined together in a national effort to make our highways safer. Colonel Sharpe, who was recently elected chairman of Region III, (PA, DE, MD, VA, WV, and D.C.) of C.A.R.E. noted, ‘Buckle Up America provides an excellent opportunity for motorists to show they CARE about their own safety. _ Pennsylvania’s new seat belt law " has been enforced since March 23, 1988. During the first week, Penn- sylvania State Police issued 104 citations for violations. Early indi- cations are that some 60 to 65 percent of motorists on Pennsyl- vania highways are wearing seat belts.” DALLAS CENTRE HARDWARE “Your chances of serious injury or death in a motor vehicle crash are greatly reduced if you are wearing your seat belts,” said Colo- nel Sharpe. ‘“‘Seat belts and child safety seats are also known to be the best defense against the drunk or drugged driver,” he added. Buckle Up America Week is timed to coincide with the upcom- ing Memorial Day holiday week- end, which, traditionally, marks the beginning of summer vacation travel throughout the United States. State Police and Highway Patrols are gearing up for a coast-to-coast campaign to heighten awareness of the life saving benefits of safety belt use. Operation C.A.R.E., a selective enforcement effort on the Interstate highway system NatiOnally will focus attention on the use of safety .belts and child safety seats and how they can help reduce the risk of serious injury or death in accidents associated with increased holiday travel.
