THE DALLAS POST/Wednesday, May 25, 1988 13 TRAVEL and RECREATION “See the USA in a Chevrolet” Quite a few years ago, a major American car manufacturer came up with a slogan that helped estab- lish a precedent. “See the U.S.A. in a Chevrolet”, made Americans think about taking their vacations in this country instead of traveling abroad. Whether or not Americans trav- eled the United States in a Chevro- let or some competitor’s vehicle became moot. What was important was the increase in the interest in * United States as a place where i “visitors could do and see thousands of things. Even though that slogan is no longer on everyone’s tongue, this country still offers the best places to visit - many a short drive down some of the best road systems in the world. From the pine forests of Maine, to the Florida Keys to the incredi- ble wilderness of Alaska, America has it all. Beside offering amusement parks, resorts, historic sites; steeped in the rich long ago of this country, opera houses, theaters, and sports arenas of all kinds, the United States still has some of the largest areas of untouched scenic beauty of any country in the world. The unique geography of Cape Cod, with its sandy beaches, and cranberry and huckleberry bogs takes the traveler back to a time when Indians roamed wide expan- ses of Eastern seacoast. The ocean is still pure there and the sheer magnatitude of crashing breakers and breaching whales awes the spirit. Down the coast some 3,000 miles, the Florida Keys; flat, green and alive with all kinds of living things, and where wild alligators roam, visitors thrill to the natural beauty of virgin territory. Cypress trees, Spanish moss, hundreds of species of birds, and miles and miles of inland water- ways, negotiated by airboat; (which are often driven by Semi- nole Indians) make for another trip back in time. A drive on Alligator Alley, the marvel of engineering, goes through the Everglades, takes the visitor from one end of the wet- lands to the other. A short distance from the Ever- glades, is the Indian River, a brackish mixture of sea and salt water that teems with many varie- ties of tropical fish. No crowded beaches and no multi-story hotels dot this beachs- cape - just serene beauty and the excitement of nature at its best greets the senses. The list goes on and on, with offerings of every type landscape, skyline, and waterway to please even the most demanding tourist can be found between our shores. It’s all there to see and enjoy. So if the traveler hops in a Chevrolet, Jeep, or Winnebage, the beautiful scenic gifts of this country are waiting. Up, up, ahd away!
