DENMON Staff Writer Mother Nature’s snowstorm and the cold, brisk air that ushered in the opening of trout season last Saturday turned away some of the usual fishermen but youngsters, boys and girls, came out to brave the wind and cold to take part in the Harveys Lake Bassmasters’ Trout Derby. Some in heavy parkas, others in jean jackets, stocking caps, gloves and boots ran and played prior to 8 a.m. in the area near Joe’s Grotto Pizza. The sun was shining and the Save your pennies Back Mountain Baseball Inc. and Dallas Kiwanis Club kicked off its fundraising project this past weekend by distributing containers for ‘‘Pennies For Baseball” snow fast disappearing as the hands of the clock reached 8 a.m., and the youngsters checked in, then took off for a favorite fishing spot around the lake. Their enthusiasm ran high as thoughts of winning one of the coveted prizes filled their heads. Some of the children fished in pairs, others went with one or both parents and some of the older, more brave boys ang girls took off alone. The fish were biting and shouts of glee could be heard in several. locations around the lake as the young fishermen or women landed their ‘prey’. Worms, lures, flies, corn and cubes of bread were among the kinds of bait used by the young anglers with many of the children finding the fish liked corn and worms their favorite last Saturday. As time advanced, the anglers began to brave the cold and soon the entrants in the Derby had their catch and wended their way back to the location adjacent to Joe's. They waited patiently in line wait- ing their turn to have their fish counted and weighed. Hands were freezing, toes were cold and faces were rosy red in the cold but the ardent, young fishermen waited patiently. It was a day they will long remember--the fishing, new friends and the cold, cold weather. to Back Mountain business places.
