Denmon Photo) Nursery school begins at L-L The advanced child development class of Lake-Lehman High School began its first nursery school of the semester, Wednesday, February 17, at the high school, under the supervision of their instructor Mrs. Jeris Baranowski. The nursery school is for three and four: year olds in the district with classes twice a week from 12:30 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. at no charge to the parents. This is the eighth year that the nursery school service has been provided by the students of the advanced child develop- ment class but it is the first year that the nursery school will be held twice in the same school year. The second school will begin March 30 and will be conducted the same as the current one, twice a week from 12:30 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. for five FOR SALE FOR SALE FOR SALE FOR RENT ANIMALS 6 BOLT fits Peerless boiler & others. 824- 1846. 5-4-P AT&T ANSWERING MACHINE; AM-FM 8 strack car ‘stereo w-2 erbed heater; Dectree floor waxer-buffer. Artist (continued from p9) and wildflowers both in and around her local home and on her beloved coast of Maine. She also teaches to inspire her students, young and old, to reach their potential through the discovery of their own per- sonal interests, mediums and techniques. A talented artist, Sue is a graduate of Kutztown Univer- sity with a B.S. in art educa- tion; did private studies for seven years under Dorothy Brace Barber and studied under Don Stone, Carlton Plummer, Mildred Sands Kratz, Dale Meyers, Mario Coper, Arthur Barbour, Charles Movalli and many others. She has been teaching for the past 12 years even before she opened her studio, ‘Imagery’ on Main Street, Dallas. Her origi- nal classes included children and adults. She also taught fifth grade students at Gate of Heaven School and some credit courses. In her recently enlarged studio, Sue now has classes from kindergarten through adults of senior citizens age. Her art programs are geared to above average students and it is not unusual to have fifth grade students doing senior high work. Since she has small classes, she and her other instructors can give more one-on-one teaching than it is possible to give in the public schools. During the day many senior citizens come to classes, some to work in the various art medi- ums as a hobby, others for exhibits. The Cider Painters of American of which Sue is a national coordinator, has made her art courses increasingly popular. She is presently negoti- ating for two more exhibits in the local area. Landscaping is the most popu- lar art subject among Sue Hand’s students, with places familiar to a student the most popular. Children also like to do animals and Sue said she has one student who hopes to go into wildlife art and Sue believes he has the ability to become suc- cessful. Among her former students, she now has some doing museum work, some in com- mercial art, and one in the fine art field selling his work to galleries. She also has several students, who are interested in going into fashions and she will try to get them into various contests and other competitions so they have an opportunity to win prizes or scholarships. Sue tries to make all of her students aware of the plusses and minuses of the different art fields. Approximately 30 of her stu- dents are members of Cider Painters of America and all of them have exhibited nationally and some in other states and as far away as Australia. Sue believes that to be suc- cessful in teaching her students it is most important that she be a good artist so she pushes herself to paint as much as 80 . hours a week. “I owe it to my students to practice what I preach,” Sue said. “I also try to make my students aware of the proper framing and matting for their artwork and I try to teach them professionalism whether they are painting as a hobby or for a career.” Sue Hand gives talks and demonstrations before groups without charge in order to edu- cate people to the possibilities in art. She wants them to realize that art is for real people with realistic goals. She wants them to realize that art is for real people with realistic goals. “People should not give up in art just as they shouldn’t give up in life,” Sue said. She has several instructors including her daughter, Heather; Mona Anania, who teaches younger children; and Karen Shelley, who teaches chil- dren. Sue teaches from seventh grade up. She has two Christian Schools, one in Sweet Valley and one in Muhlenburg, who bring in their children by bus once a week for a two-hour class. The Muhlenburg school children receive credit for their work. One of the largest paintings Sue has done is a watercolor, four and a half feet in length and seven feet wide, on display at College Misericordia. Sue did it when she was in Maine last summer and has more than 100 hours of painting in it. It is a painting of flower boxes against windows and a brick wall with the sunshine hitting it through the trees. She is also assisted in her shop by her husband, Joseph R. Hand, who does all or most of the framing and matting. Sue’s work and that of many of her students have been exhib- ited in North Carolina, Florida, Montana, Washington, D.C. West Virginiua, Australia, New Jersey, South Caolina, and numerous places in Pennsyl- vania and locally. She is the founder and a director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania ARt Workshop; founder and sponsor of Suzanne Maria Rossetti Memorial Juried Art Show; board member of Art Gallery, College Misericordia; board member of Luzerne County Community College art department; editor of the Cider Painters of America newsletter and a member of numerous art groups and organizations. ~ $20; infant's walker $10. 735.2865. 6-4-P WORLD BOOK ENCY- TALL METAL CABINET dbl. door used for clothes storage, $15; white metal base cabinet $10.
