(Photo by Charlot Denmon) Proving that teens do think of others BY CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Lake-Lehman High School senior Joanne Kelly has played an active role in the high school Key Club during the past three years. During her sophomore year, Joanne was a board member of the organization which is sponsored by the Back Mountain Kiwanis Club. During her junior year, she served as treasurer and this year, Joanne is president of the Key Club. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kelly of Harveys Lake, Joanne and other members o the club visit the former Car- penter’s Nursing Home on a regular basis. They play bingo with the residents, and recrea- tional games and also hold par-. ties for the residents on special holidays. They also visit with the residents on a one-to-one basis following the recreation period. Next week, Joanne and some of the others plan to volunteer the high school’s at the soup kitchen in Wyoming Valley where they will probably meet members from other high school Key Clubs. Since Joanne has been active in the club, they have started a “Builder” club at the junior high. Its purpose is to help students become involved with ‘the Key Club when they move up to senior high. The high school club has par- ticipated in many community services and with others Joanne has assisted in the Muscular Dystrophy organization, the local triathlon, Gream Ameri- can Smokeout, and held a blood drive at the high school. Joanne was also among those, who assisted the' American Red Cross at the recent Gate of Heaven blood drive. She sells candy bars to raise money to contribute to the Spe- cial Olympics, and helps with the retarded at 'Lehman-Jack- son Elementary School. The Key Club is not her only interest. Joanne is a member of ‘Students Against Driving Drunk’ (SADD) and the county’s SADD organi- zation. Recently with several other members of SADD, Joanne spoke to Marines in Forty Fort about drugs and alcohol abuse and the effects of drinking and driving. She was among the SADD members, who volunteered to make candy for the county’s Valentine party for the retarded children, and those who had a stand at the Wyoming Valley Mall over the past weekend. Joanne also did a commercial on drinking and driving for WBRE-TV Channel 28. With other members, Joanne visited the Wilkes-Barre Gen- eral and the Nesbitt Memorial Hospitals and distributed gifts in the pediatrics departments. Joanne was Mrs. Claus. Despite spending much of her time in service organizations and projects, Joanne is a good student and carries a ‘B’ aver- age. She is a member of the school’s yearbook staff where she is in charge of advertising and also is active in M.Y.F. at the Alderson Methodist Church, in which she holds the position of secretary. Joanne plans to attend college and major in speech pathology or audiology, hopefully, Califor- nia University of Pennsylvania or Bloomsburg University. In her leisure time, Joanne enjoys going out with friends or listening to music. She is also in the high school chorus directed by Ms. Jane Morris. Ms, Rose- mary Zbieck is advisor of the Key Club, and Catherine Wolfe is the advisor of S.A.D.D. When time permits, Joanne becomes involved in the theatre and, for the first time, this year on February 20, she plans | take part in the school’s donké basketball game. “I don’t know how to ride a donkey, nor do I play basketball but I'm going to give it a try,” said Joanne. “It’s for a good cause and the students will com- pete against members of the faculty. It should be fun.” Saluting the Back M Lake Lehman ountain This Page Sponsored By The Following Businesses: Wrestling Teams + DALLAS AUTO PARTS 668 Memorial Highway, Dallas 675-2143 (NAR) \... 4 COOK'S PHARMACY 159 Memorial Hwy., Shavertown Shavertown Store Open 7 days a week ‘til 9 P.M. 675-1191 SHAVERTOWN FINO’S REXALL PHARMACY ‘at the light in Dallas’ 675-1141 DRURY’S AUTO TAG SERVICE 607 Memorial Highway, Dallas (formerly Brader's Auto Tag Service) 675-8507 James J.
