Not knowing when to contact Social Security could mean lost benefits which could never be recovered, Lavelle said. A person should contact Social Security: : : -Before getting his or her first job because a Social Security number is required. A person should apply for a number at least two weeks before the number is needed. -After a death in the family to see if survivor benefits can be aid. > -When someone in the family is disabled to find out if disability benefits can be paid. -At retirement - at age 65 for full rate benefits, or as early as 62 for reduced benefits. A person should sign up for Medicare 2 or 3 months before 65 even if there are no retirement plans. : -Anytime a person has a question about Social Security. When a person calls Social Security, the people there can tell: -How much work credit is needed to be insured for benefits. -Who can get benefits. -How to replace a lost Social Security or Medicare card. , -How to get a free statement of earnings reported to the person’s Social Security record. ] -What documents a person needs when applying for benefits. A person can also start applying for benefits by telephone. Most Social Security business can be handled by telephone. Just call the Wilkes-Barre Social Security office at 826-6371. The office is located at Room 2227, Penn Place, 20 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. * % % The Veterans Administration has announced a 4.2 percent cost-of- living increase in VA disability compensation payments. Administrator of Veterans Affairs Thomas K. Tragi- | cally, less than half of the | ‘nation’s young children are | properly protected in their car | safety seats. February 7-13 is ‘‘National | Child Passenger Safety Aware- ness Week’. The Valley Auto- mobile Club has joined together | this week with local police, | safety advocates and insurance companies to call on adult | motorists to take heed to the | timely reminder to ‘Be a Valen- | tine for Life: Buckle-Up Your Family’. Parents and other drivers | with children must be certain | that the child safety seat is installed properly and used cor- | rectly every time the child trav- | els in a motor vehicle. Carefully | review the safety seat manufac- | turer’s instructions on correct | installation and use. There are | many different types of child | safety seats available to the | consumer, and each has specific | instructions. It is equally important that both children and adult automo- ! bile passengers are protected. Not only is protecting our child | passengers the, safe and smart thing to do, but it is also the law. Every state has now enacted laws requiring young children to ride in safety seats. | And 31 states and the District of | Columbia have safety belt laws | for adults. | Children depend on us fof | almost every aspect of their day to day living. This Valentine’s Day should serve as a reminder of our responsibility to protect that which is most important - their lives. SPECIAL TIME FOR MEN 7 (i and many more | MasterCard | ¥
