Har- grove, a 13 year major league veteran, is known throughout the American League as ‘‘The Human Rain Delay” because of all of the time he takes between pitches when he is hitting. “It’s not an act. I think I've cut down a lot on what I’ve done at the plate, but it’s something I’ve done because I think that the key to doing everything well is concentration and there are just certain things I need to get out of the way to be able to concentrate. One being that I hate to have creases in my batting glove, so really it all started with that and then it all snowballed. It’s nothing designed to bother people or put on a show,” commented the Texan who has spent the last seven seasons with the Cleveland Indians but is currently trying to win a job with the’Oakland A’s as a free-agent. Hargrove further stated, ‘‘I found also that it bothers certain pitchers. If they are out there mad at me because I'm doing that, then they are not doing their jobs, so that’s to my advantage. It bugs Dave Stieb to death. I admit it’s a trademark.” Hargrove is a career .290 hitter and has batted over .300 six times including a .323 mark in his 1974 Rookie of the Year season with the Texas Rangers.
