Grammy-award nominee Eddie Blazonczyk and the Versatones of Chicago are among the top ethnic bands performing one day at the east end of the fairgrounds. Audiences are welcome to dance or just listen to the bands which will play from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Wednes- day through Sunday, August 27-31, and from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Monday, September 1. Soloists and ethnic dancers will perform matinees from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Eddie Blazonczyk and the Versa- tones received a Grammy nomina- tion for their strong-selling album ‘Polka Fireworks,” in this, the first year a polka category was included in the awards. The Chicago-based band will perform at the fair on Wednesday, Aug. 27, the day when all senior citizens showing medicare cards are admitted free into the fairgrounds. Lehigh Valley bands take over the next two days. The well-known Bavarian sound of the Walt Groller Orchestra will be featured Thurs- day, Aug. 28, and the Pennsylvania Dutch comedy and dance band of LeRoy Heffentrager will perform on Friday, Aug. 29. The popular Jimmy Sturr Orches- tra from New York will be at the fair Saturday, Aug. 30, featuring big band hits and polka favorites. Brass With Class from northeastern Penn- sylvania will appear on Sunday, Aug. 31. For the only afternoon band per- formance, fair favorites The Panny Sisters will be joined by the Frank Hanner Orchestra from 2:30-5:30 p.m. on the final day of the fair, Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. The Dallas School District is requesting the cooperation of par- ents with children of school age who have not registered for the 1986-87 school year. - Mr. Gerald Wycallis, Superintend- ent, says it is essential that the school district be informed of all new students planning to register, especially the kindergarten and first grade students. Problems occur with class assign- ments and transportation when stu- dents are registered late. He said the Dallas School District encour- ages parents of new students or SN NN SS to cooperate schools to register their children immediately. All kindergarten through 6th grade students are to register at the Administration Building, Church St., Dallas. Junior and Senior High students will register at their respective school offices located on Conyngham Ave., Dallas. Parents must bring. birth certifi- cates report cards from the pre- vious school, and immunization records. No student will be allowed to enter school without proof of the required immunizations. Winter, of Shaver- town, Associate Professor of Phys- ics at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus has been awarded a federal research grant of close to $90,000 for his work in thoretical atomic phys- ics. The grant is one of two new grants in atomic physics awarded by the’ Department of Energy (DOE) this year. His project is entitled ‘Electron Transfer, Ionization and Excitation in Atomic Collisions’, and the first step involves using a computer to calculate the probability of an elec- tron transfer in a collision between protons and ions. The grant was approved by the Division of Chemi- cal Science of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, a division of the DOE that funds research related to creating more energy. He held a fellowship at Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ire- land from 1972-73, and then served as a research associate at Rice University, Houston, Texas, from 1973-76. He was appointed as assistant professor of physics by Penn State in 1976 and was assigned to the Wilkes-Barre campus. The fair will hold its third annual “Youth Talent Showcase’ at the free stage 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31. Young amateur entertainers ages 5- 18 will have the chance to show off their talent while competing for trophies and recognition. Applications to become a contes- tant are now available at the fair office. Ed Galgon, chairman of the Far- merama committee, said that the show has become “a big hit with fairgoers’ as well as being “fun for the kids participating.” Boys and girls can sing, dance, play an instrument or twirl baton. Small instrumental gorups can com- pete as well as individual instru- mentalists. Trophies will be awarded in the four age group divisions of 5 and 6 year olds, 7 to 9 year olds, 10 to 13 year olds and 14 to 18 year olds. All performers will receive a certificate of talent recognition. The deadline for entries is Friday, Aug. 1.
