A one-day regional conference on
post-polio sequals is scheduled for
March 14, 1986 at the Philadelphia
Airport Hilton, under the ausipices
of the Pennsylvania and New Jersey
Easter Seal Societies and co-spon-
sored by the two states’ Depart-
ments of Health.
It’s been 30 years since the Salk
polio vaccine was introduced. Thirty
years ago there were almost 39,000
known cases of ‘‘poliomyelitis’’;
today, there are fewer than a dozen.
Of the some quarter-million polio
survivors, however, more than 80
percent today are experiencing
degilitating after-effects of the dis-
ease they thought they’d conquered.
While current research indicates
no recurrence of the polio virus, a
large number of the survivors are
suffering from ‘‘post-polio muscle
atrophy” (PPMA), which presents
as extreme weakness and fatigue,
difficulty in breathing, pain in mus-
cles and joints and a deterioration
of both the polio-affected and non-
affected muscles.
The Pennsylvania and New
Jersey post-polio conference is
aimed at physicians, otehr health
practitioners and post-polio survi-
vors, in order to update them on
research, provide a forum for shar-
ing experiences and create support
networks.
For more information on the
March 14 post-polio conference in
Philadelphia, contact the Pennsyl-
vania Easter Seal Society at P.O.
the New Jersey Easter Seal Society
at P.O. Box 155, Milltown, N.J.

(EDCNP) are providing a free
workshop to help deal with the
problems of house fires caused by
solid and liquid fuel heating sys-

John Turner, Instructor for the
Office of Fire Science at Luzerne
County Community College recently
stated that individuals need to be
educated concerning safety of wood
and coal stoves, fireplaces, and
especially kerosene heaters. With
the onslaught of winter we can
expect and are presently experienc-
ing an increase in home fires due to
