It’s been 30 years since the Salk polio vaccine was introduced. Thirty years ago there were almost 39,000 known cases of ‘‘poliomyelitis’’; today, there are fewer than a dozen. Of the some quarter-million polio survivors, however, more than 80 percent today are experiencing degilitating after-effects of the dis- ease they thought they’d conquered. While current research indicates no recurrence of the polio virus, a large number of the survivors are suffering from ‘‘post-polio muscle atrophy” (PPMA), which presents as extreme weakness and fatigue, difficulty in breathing, pain in mus- cles and joints and a deterioration of both the polio-affected and non- affected muscles. The Pennsylvania and New Jersey post-polio conference is aimed at physicians, otehr health practitioners and post-polio survi- vors, in order to update them on research, provide a forum for shar- ing experiences and create support networks.
