According to Ralph W. Abele, Executive Director of the Commis- sion, the winter trout stocking pro- gram in lakes throughout the Com- monwealth is about to begin. The Commission’s “Great White Fleet” of trout stocking trucks will be bringing more than 136,000 brook and rainbow trout to 61 lakes in 43 counties of the Commonwealth. The stocking took place in Novem- ber and December, and although they ‘were designed primarily for the benefit of ice fishermen, open water fishing is also legal. «Commission law enforcement per- sonnel remind anglers that during the extended trout season the creel limit for trout is three per day, combined species, and the trout must be seven inches or longer. Boating safety education pays off. The Pennsylvania Fish Commis- sion’s Boating Safety Education drunk boating law and tighter law enforcement by the Commission’s waterways conservation officers, are all beginning to pay off, accord- ing to Joe Greene, a boating safety education specialist in the Commis- sion’s Bureau of Waterways. “Not only was the number of fatal boating accidents down so far in 1985, but the number of non-fatal accidents decreased as well,” said Greene. Of the 50 reported non-fatal acci- dents so far in 1985, 31 were caused by collisions with boats or other objects; seven were due to fires or explosions; four were due to capsiz- ings; three to flooding, swamping or sinking. Other accidents were attributed to grounding, falling while waterskiing, being struck by a ski rope and a boat prepeller. “The largest single reason for accidents caused by collisions is : operators simply not watching where they are going,” said Greene. “This is particularly true near launch ramps, marinas and other confined spaces.” accounted for 39 of the non-fatal accidents, while only three were attributed to powerboats under 16 feet. Accidents involving jet ski boats increased from two in 1984 to five in 1985. Two of the accidents involved sailboats and one a canoe. Greene cited generally favorable weather conditions during the boat- ing season as anothe factor in the lower number of accidents this year. A 2 ¢ i PHONE 654- 1. ASSORTED HOSIERY |. . $900,700 7.
