Comet
program
scheduled
Halley’s Comet, now visible to
amateur astronomers, will become
visible to observers in the Wilkes-
Barre area during the early evening
hours in December, as it makes its
approach toward the sun.
Since Halley’s Comet will not pass
around the sun again before the
year 2061, Luzerne County Commu-
nity College, the Wilkes College
Astronomy Club, and the Luzerne
County Science Teachers Associa-
tion will sponsor a joint program
designed to provide area residents
with an opportunity to view the
comet.
The special program on Halley's
Comet will be open to the public
free of charge, and will be con-
ducted in two evening sessions at
the Educational Conference Center
on the LCCC main campus in Nanti-
coke on Wednesday, Dec. 4 and
Thursday, Dec. 5, pending a clear
sky for viewing.
The sessions will begin at 7 p.m.
and will include a lecture featuring
Ken Lewis, professor of physics at
LCCC, the viewing of a film strip
and video tape, and comet observa-
tion through telescopes set up on the
community college campus. Pro-
gram participants are encouraged
to dress accordingly and bring a set
of binoculars.
Reservations for the sessions are
limited, and will be accepted on a
first come, first serve basis. For
further information or to register to
attend contact the Office of Continu-
ing Education at Luzerne County
Community College at 829-7477.
