Ball held
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital's Auxiliary recently held its 17th annual Starlight Ball at the
Woodlands, an Inn. The event was attended by over 500 guests who enjoyed an evening of
gourmet food and hours of dancing. The ball is the Auxiliary’s single-largest fund-raising event.
Proceeds are used to support programs sponsored by the Auxiliary for the benefit of Wilkes-
Barre General Hospital and its patients. Highlights of the evening was the drawing to award a
Mercedes Benz 190 Class, won by Dr. John Querci. Auxiliary members who spend many hours

Program conducted
A program on ‘‘Careers in Communications’’ was presented recently at Penn State Wilkes-
Barre. It was the third in a career exploration series sponsored by the Center for Individual
Development at the local Penn State campus in Lehman. Participating in the panel discussion
were Penn State graduates who work in the communications field. Shown are, standing, from

School display
The Lake-Lehman School Library is alive with displays provided by the Armed Forces. The local
Army, Navy, Marine, and Coas Guard Recruiters, working in conjunction with Carole Pyle,
school librarian, have made available to our students much information regarding our country’s
Armed Forces. Upon entering the library, a person is immediately greeted with colorful posters
and brochures describing opportunities offered by each branch. A collection of books, featuring
historical conflicts such as World War Il and Vietnam, are on display. Of special interest is a
model of a Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine. The model is 7 ft. long and lighted from within to
show the living and working quarters of a modern submarine. Chief Petty Officer James A.
McNichol, was responsible for delivering the model to the library.

For the second consecutive year, Dallas Rotary Club is sponsoring a foreign exchange student
under the Rotary Exchange Student program. This year, the student is Minna Tolvanen from
Finland. Minna will live with several host families, during her stay in the United States and
attend Dallas Senior High School. She will return to Finland next July. In the accompanying
photograph, Minna is shown being introduced to the club yb Don Lockhart, Club President, left,
and Hugh Woodward, first host family.
Employee cited
John Bushko has been selected as The Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, Employee for the
Month of November. He joined The Meadows in July 1984 as a dishwasher in the Dietary
Department. Born in Nanticoke, Mr. Bushko attended Dallas and Nanticoke High Schools. He
graduated from the CETA and Red Rock Job Corps Programs with certificates in auto body and
brick and block masonry respectively. He resides in Wilkes-Barre with his wife, Mary, and two
children, John Richard and Heather Lynn. Mr. Bushko was presented a cash award for his
winning suggestion by Thomas Sweeney, Administrator of the Meadows. Looking on is his

The Emergency Medical Services Program at Luzerne County Community College recently
hosted a guest presentation for its students featuring Mary Llewellyn, Educational Counselor of
