The Department has supported efforts at recycling and resource recovery through the Solid Waste Manage- ment Grants Program. DER Secre- tary Nicholas DeBenedictis awarded grants to Wilkes-Barre City and Monroe County for curb- side recycling and resource recov- ery projects in October, 1984. The DER Wilkes-Barre Regional Office and the City of Wilkes-Barre are planning Luzerne County Recy- cling Awareness Day Oct. 26 on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre. DER Secretary DeBenedictis, and Wilkes-Barre Mayor McLaughlin and county officials will award prizes donated by corporate spon- sors to schools and individual stu- dents from Luzerne County who collect the most metal beverage cans for recycling: All proceeds from newspapers and metal bever- , age cans recycled as part of the " Luzerne County Recycling Aware- ness Day will be donated to the Ken Pollock Children’s Wing of the Osterhout Free Library. DER’s Wilkes-Barre Regional Office will also be conducting a public educa- tion campaign, distributing posters, household recycling guides, and recycling primers for municipalities who are considering recycling. DER and the Pennsylvania Roadside Council have established a toll-free Recycling Hotline for information on markets, local recyclers, and additional recycling materials. This toll-free number is 1-800-346-4242. In addition, DER and the Depart- ment of Education are developing an environmental education curricu- lum for grades K through 12 to help school districts initiate or expand for grades K through 12 to help school districts initiate or expand environmental education programs. I THINK IT IS TERRIBLY EXCITING that we have a Shaver- town resident Dr. John N. Kennedy, M.D., who recently returned from a series of four organ recitals given in West Germany and Switzerland. The recitals were in commemora- tion of the 300th anniversary of the birth of composers Johann Sebas- tian Bach and George Frederick Handel. The recitals were presented in Bavaria in St. Paul’s Church; in the Theatinerskirche in the city of Munich, the Munster Organ in Bern, Switzerland and at the Engelberg Kloster, which is the largest organ in Europe. -0- MR. The Crispells are descendants of Antoine (Crespel) Crispell, who came to this country in 1660 and along with 11 other patentees found the village of New Paltz, N.Y., near here. Officers elected for the Pennsyl- vania Branch for the ensuing year are: Dr. Leon Sidorek, President; Lela Sickler, Vice President; Lois Post, Recording Secretary; Betty Strzelczyk, Corresponding Secre- tary; and Alma Brown, Treasurer.
