Lots of people have commented
this week on the unfortunate death
of Samantha Smith, the school girl
whose correspondence with Soviet
leader Yuri Andropov resulted in a
peace mission to the Soviet Union.
Like many of us Samantha feared
the results of a =
nuclear war.
Unlike most of
us she tried to
do something
about it. Its
terrible that
such a young
person is no
more but she
will long be
remembered
for her attempt ha
to bring a
better diplo- KINGSBURY
matic relationship to two major
powers. 5
With summer coming to an end,
lots of area clubs are winding down
their warm-weather activities.
Harvey’s Lake Yacht Club held a
late summer dock party recently.
Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and
cocktails on the dock followed by a
hot buffet in the clubhouse. Mr. and
Mrs. Scott Schuster were chairmen
of the party. Other committee mem-
bers are Mr. and Mrs. Bill Baker,
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Roth, Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Barnes and Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Wentz. -0-

I’m sure I join the entire commu-
nity in wishing the best of every-
thing to Father Joseph Samons,
former pastor of St. Therese’s
Church in Shavertown who is now
serving as pastor of St. Mark’s
Church in Inkerman. Father Sam-
mons is admired by many in the
back Mountain and will surely be
missed.
The 64th annual reunion of the
descendants of John and Rachel
Bulford, early pioneers of the Back
Mountain area was held Aug. 18 in
the Bloomingdale Grange Hall.
In 1922, the first reunion was held
at Fernbrook Park.
Following the covered dish picnic
dinner a business meeting was
called to order with President
Garry Miers presiding. Treasurer’s
report was given by Hazel Crockett,
and the historian’s report by
Thelma Norrie. Helen Franklin
recorded the minutes.
The following received silver dol-
lars as prizes. Ruby and Clarence
Elson, Thelma and Earnest Norrie,
Scot Sarley, Becky Miers, Leeland
Cooke, Gary and Pat Miers, Nettie
