Pioneers of America (retired Bell
employees) have been busy over the
- last several months making service
adjustments for individuals who
subscribe to the Mercy Hospital
‘‘Heartline” Emergency Response
System.
According to JoAnne Dinoski,
coordinator of the Heartline Pro-
gram, “The contribution of efforts
made by the pioneers have been
very instrumental in the overall
success of heartline, and are greatly
appreciated by both the hospital and
the subscribers as well.”
Heartline is a personal emergency
response system sponsored by the
Mercy Hospital Auxiliary which
allows elderly and disabled individ-
uals to maintain their independent
living. Subscribers receive a heart-
line communicator for their homes
which has a portable ‘‘help” button
which can be worn on clothing or

is participating in an Ambulatory
Diabetes Teaching Program. Mercy
Hospital has offered the program
since 1984, but recently has been
chosen as a reimbursement site for
outpatient diabetes education serv-
ices. Previously the training pro-
gram was not covered by Blue
Cross (a nominal fee was charged).
The program offers reimburse-
ment to eligible health care provi-
ders for outpatient education of the
chronic diabetic patient. To partici-
pate in the program diabetics have
to meet certain criteria established
by Blue Cross.
Mercy also has been chosen by
the National Diabetes Advisory
Board to participate in a pilot test
of new uniform national standards
which are designed to upgrade the
quality and accessibility of Diabetes
Patient Education.
Mercy’s next outpatient diabetes
education program will be con-
ducted at the hospital during Sep
tember. Instructors for the program
will consist of Physicians, Nurses,
Dieticians, Physical Therapists,
Pharmacists and Social Workers.
