Mercy Hospital has offered the program since 1984, but recently has been chosen as a reimbursement site for outpatient diabetes education serv- ices. Previously the training pro- gram was not covered by Blue Cross (a nominal fee was charged). The program offers reimburse- ment to eligible health care provi- ders for outpatient education of the chronic diabetic patient. To partici- pate in the program diabetics have to meet certain criteria established by Blue Cross. Mercy also has been chosen by the National Diabetes Advisory Board to participate in a pilot test of new uniform national standards which are designed to upgrade the quality and accessibility of Diabetes Patient Education. Mercy’s next outpatient diabetes education program will be con- ducted at the hospital during Sep tember. Instructors for the program will consist of Physicians, Nurses, Dieticians, Physical Therapists, Pharmacists and Social Workers.
