By JOHN RODGERS Sports Columnist The Shavertown Fire Company has completed its plans for the first- ever Bass Fishing Tournament to be held at Frances Slocum State Park, Aug. 10. i Registration will begin at 5 a.m. and official starting time will be 6 a.m. with the conclusion being 3 p.m. Weigh in will follow the tourney’s end. The main head- quarters will be the main boat ramp inside the park. There will be a $10.00 entry fee, with 12 trophies in all to be presented. There will be refreshments served at the fire hall following the weigh in. A reminder — all park rules will be in effect including, no gas motors and fishing licenses are required. Seeing that Frances Slocum is the site and happens to be one of my personal hot spots, here area few tips that might help anyone inter- ested. Since large mouth bass a~. che main inhabitants, shallow waters are the place to head especially early in the day, preferably where weeds and stumps are located. Places I have found very productive are directly across from the boat rentals and off the left point from the boat rentals. Bait and techniques I have found to be beneficial are rubber night- walkers in black and electric grape of the weedless variety. Fish them directly in the weed beds, and along Physicals set Jerry Stinson, Dallas High School Athletic Director, announced physi- cals for girls field hockey will be Thursday, Aug. 1, 8:30 a.m. in the nurse’s office; girls volleyball, Aug. 1, 9:15 a.m. and cheerleaders, at 9:45 a.m., both in the nurse’s office. All makeup physicals will be held Aug. 8, in the nurse’s office, boys from 8:30 to 9 a.m.; girls from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Take care in night hours There are always a lot of jokes about a person’s ability to see in the dark, but there is nothing amusing about the special set of problems that motorcyclists have both in seeing and being seen at night! The motorcycle’s smaller size and silhouette can make it harder to be seen by other motorists. That’s why motorcyclists should take extra care to make themselves seen at night. One way to do this is to equip their motorcycles, their helmets and even their clothing with reflective material to catch the other driver’s eyes. Riders should also make sure that they have an unscratched and untinted face shield on their hel- mets. That way they can see as clearly as possible without the glare their vision. Because motorcycle headlights may not cover the road as well as a | car’s do, many riders slow down at night so they don’t override their beams. They may also use other A motorist seeing just one light behind him on the highway may think that it’s an automobile with a burned out light and might there- : is a motorcycle on the road. ~ And, one final reminder on night riding - remember that potholes, oil slicks and other road hazards are harder to see and identify at night. A safe night riding motorcyclist keeps expecially alert for every type of potential hazard both from the road and the other driver. That includes knowing what your own } phusical limitations are and not riding when you're sleepy or physi- cally tired which would slow down your reaction time and reflexes. Another important safety reminder - take a Motorcycle Safety Program (MSP) free course. They are designed for both the novice and the experienced rider and are avail- able statewide. Motorcycles are pro- vided. The only requirement for this Pennsylvania Department of Trans- portation program is a Class 5 permit or license. An important plus is that you receive your Class 5 with no further testing! This pro- gram is headquartered at IUP. Set the hook solid on strikes and don’t let the snags discourage you. Other productive lure are medium diving repalas and rebels, using a little quicker retrieve. One more that’s a little unorthodox is a small fly about three feet behind a small bobber, using a slow jerking retrieve. For those who prefer live bait, nightwalkers are good when fished on the bottom with no weight, giving the rod an occasional twitch, although small crappie can drive you crazy at times. Live shiners about two-three inches are also a good choice when fished about one to three feet off a bobber. Make sure, however, that you allow ample time for the fish to run with your minnow. (The seven-second rule is good to follow). In the afternoon hours, especially on sunny days remember fish will already be in cover and will spook easy so be patient and quiet. There is no reason to change your style or location, just be quiet. Also keep in mind fish feel vibrations in the water from both your boat bottom and the shore line, so walk softly. Another thing you can keep in mind to make this a memorable event is, bring your family. Frances Slocum is a beautiful park and supplies fun for everyone of all ages. There are places for picnick- ing and your wife and children can have a ball while waiting for dad to come in with his trophy catches. Believe me, you'll come back! -0- A note of different interest, let’s hear it for the DuPont Company. For the third year now it has donated $50,000 to the Fish and Wildlife Service for the support of the captive breeding program of the American Bald Eagle. On the endangered species with only five to six thousand in the lower 48 states it’s nice to see some people care. We can show our concern also, the National Wild Life Federation is seeking a bill to ban lead shot from hunting. Lead shot is a major factor i nthe diminish of the bald eagle. The shot falls to the bottom of swamps and ponds where it is consumed by bottom-feeding ducks. Slowed down by the slow acting lead poisoning they become easy prey for the eagle who consumes the poison and dies. Let’s become a little more respon- sible and back this bill and switch to steel shot. It could add a lot of beauty to the future.
