The Town House is
ike a friend’s home
By KATHY SUDA
Staff Correspondent
Walking into the Town House Restaurant is like walking into a good
friend’s home for dinner. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy, just
right for the perfect dining, or for just grabbing a snack.
On February 1, 1985, Nelson Downend took ownership of the
restaurant and made it into one of Dallas’ favorite eateries. The
restaurant has a homey atmosphere with its knotty pine wall
paneling, wagon wheel chandeliers and large windows.
Unlike other restaurant owners who linger in the background,
Downend spends most of the time in the dining room with the
customers. Downend says he enjoys being with people and hiding in
the kitchen would “take all the fun out of the business.” In fact,
Downend says his customers are quite exceptional. “It’s nice being
with people,” Downend said. “I couldn’t make widgets for a living.”
Downend’s Town House sports the slogan, “Where Dallas Meets.”
Downend explains the saying like this: “If you want to meet anybody,
sooner or later, they’ll be in here.”
In Downend’s opinion, the reason so many people come to the
restaurant is because he serves good food and lots of it. Downend’s
wife prepares much of the food and their chef makes homemade pies.
special at $1.25, and the daily salad bar and lunch buffet at $2.25,
make eating at the Town House economical as well as fun. The
restaurant is one that makes you feel comfortable if you come alone
or with your family.
Downend seems to know all his customers by name and stops to
chat with almost all of them. He’s quick with a joke which adds to the
friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Even Downend’s nickname, “the fat
man’, makes the customer feel he can relax and be himself while
they enjoy their lunch or breakfast.
In the near future, Downend plans to refinish the exterior of the
building and will soon be open in the evening hours serving chicken
and ribs.
The Town House is open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday
and Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The ‘restaurant is located at 31
Lake Street, just past the light in Dallas.
