Gr A 3 By JOHN F. KILDUFF Staff Writer When the 39th Annual Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction opens tomor- row, there will be a new twist to this year’s Children’s Auction segment — “more fun for the kids.” Thanks to the efforts of the 1985 Chil- dren’s Auction Committee, chaired by Dallas resident Susan Davis, all the “little people’’ attending the auction with their parents will be able to participate in four days of fun and games, including a new ‘Chinese auction” geared toward involving the children in the auction process. - “Our main goal this year,” Davis said, “was to make it more fun for the kids. We (Children’s Auction Committee) wanted to make it more like a fair than an auction,” Davis said. Davis, of RD 5 Sutton Road, Dallas, said she and her committee understood the problem that small children didn’t really understand the actual auction process (selling items). So, the commit- tee felt it was important to involve the children in the auction process as well as a variety of children’s activities. “We knew the children didn’t under- stand the selling of antiques,” Davis said. “So we came up with the idea of a‘Chinese Auction’ for the kids.” The Chinese Auction, Davis says, will require children to purchase 20 tickets for $2. The 20 tickets can then be used to bid on a variety of items ranging from soccer shoes, t-shirts to video club member- ships. The children bid on the items by depositing as many tickets, into a box near the item, as they feel the item is worth. The child with the most tickets bid on an item — gets it. ~ In addition to the Chinese Auction, Davis and her committee have scheduled Channel 16’s- Miss Judy; McDonald's Grimace; Channel 16’s Uncle Ted and his magic show and live band entertainment. Davis, 34, is the mother of three active young boys, Andy, 5; Nathan, 4; and says, will be at her side most of the four days of the auction as she supervises the many events. When asked how she became involved Committee meets Shown here are members of the Children’s cAuction Committee at a recent meeting conducted at the>home of Susan Davis. Then I called him one day and he said, ‘yes, you've got it’,”’ Davis explained. Davis’ committee includes: Liz Llyod, Dallas; Donna Gaia, Shavertown; Kathi Flack, Shavertown; Denise Castillano, Shavertown; and Kathleen Savage of Dallas. The members, Davis said, ‘Helped greatly with solicitation of goods for the auction and will be manning the many different booths during the auction.” Said Davis; ‘‘Since we all have children about the same age, we’ve been looking for activities for kids. And that’s basi- cally how the idea (of focusing on chil- dren) came about.” So if you're planning to attend the auction to check out the bargains, why not bring the kids along and let them bid on the item of their choice? Children’s Auction will be different The committee for the children’s por- tion of the Back Mountain Memorial planning a new format and activities for the children this year. A schedule of events will include times for pony rides, face painting, a magic show and a live band. The children’s auction will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 13 with Miss Judy of Hatchy Milatchy scheduled to be present at this time. The format for the children’s auction this year will be a Chinese auction. A sheet of 20 tickets may be purchased for $2. The bearers of the tickets will have time to wander among the tables set up with this year’s special items. The children will put a ticket and or tickets next to the items they hop to win. At 11:30, a drawing for each item will be held. The committee hopes this will insure more children going home with special findings.
