‘" The Dallas/Meyers game might
well be defined as “Too Many and
Too Big vs. “Not Enough and Too
‘Small’ because that’s what it was
in the contest won by Meyers, 27-7,
at Dallas last Saturday, spoiling
Homecoming crowd.
. The Mohawks’ starting lineup
averaged from 178 to 230, most of
them in or near the 190’s; the
Mountaineers’ starting lineup from
140 to 205 (just one) and most of
them in the 155 to 165 range.
But Saturday, it was one of those
games where it didn’t seem to
matter to the Mountaineers. Despite
their size, they played a better
game than fans have seen them
play all year.
One former Dallas coach was
heard to remark after the game
that the coach doesn’t have to be
disappointed in those kids; they’re
coached better and played their
hearts out more than any team I
have seen in Dallas for years and
years. That’s a big statement - one
to make the kids and their coaches
proud. A statement to remind par-
on that field are ‘“‘only kids”.

his team the ball on the Mountai-

ried it to the 33-yard line and, from
there, Gregg Lott took Maffei’s pass
going away and went in for a
touchdown with 10:16 ‘on the clock.
Daryl Boich kicked the extra point
and Meyers went in front, 7-0.
On the Mountaineers’ possession,
they were unable to move the ball
-and punted to the 50-yard line. Four
plays later, the Mohawks were still
in the same spot, due to a facemask
penalty, their third 15-yard setback
of the quarter. On the fourth down,
Maffei hit Caffrey with a screen and

for a second Meyers score.

scoring. Despite the Mohawks’ size
and holding penalties, the Dallas
defense held the Mohawks through-
out the rest of the half.
With 5:02 on the clock, Charlie

yard line into the end zone for a
Dallas touchdown. Darren Ford

for the score. Earl Weidner kicked
the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Cadwa-
lader passed to Van Gorder who
took off for 44 yards before the
Rangers took him down at the 16-
yard line. The Knights took the ball
to the 10-yard line in their next two
plays from where Bill George car-
ried it over for a second touchdown.
The extra point was good and the
Knights were in front, 14-0.
On their possession, the Rangers
were held by a strong Knight
defense and had to punt from their
own 34-yard line. Cadwalader went
to the air and connected with Bill
Bearde for 24 yards and Van Gorder
took over on the next play taking
the ball in from the 10-yard line for
a score. The kick for extra point
failed but the Knights closed out the
half, 20-0.
Lake-Lehman went scoreless in
the third quarter, but with Boyle
recovering a fumble at the Knights
40-yard line it set up the Knights
longest drive of the game. Lake-
Lehman used a running attack with
the exception of one 16-yard hit and,
after 11 plays, Van Gorder plunged
over from the 1-yard line for the
final Lake-Lehman score. The kick
for the extra point failed but the
Knights were in front, 26-0.

neers the ball on the 6-yard line.
The Mountaineers went with a
tackle eligible play and Matt Mihal
made a first down run inside the
seven, but Dallas lost the ball to the
Mohawks when an official called the
grounded ball that left Mihal’s
hands a fumble and a Mohawk
recovery.
Before the half ended, there were
three more turnovers between the
two teams and a touchdown run by
Meyers Schwab called back because
of a Mohawk holding call.

The PAT failed and Meyers led 20-7.

clock, Caffrey took a punt on the 3-
yard line and ran 97 yards down-
field for a touchdown. The kick for
the extra point was good and the
Mohawks led, 27-7.
In the second half, the Mountai-
neers moved the ball downfield sev-
eral times, at least twice inside the
10-yard line, but the Meyers defense
held the small Mountaineers.
Meyers had nine first downs,
Dallas had 13. Meyers gained 265
yards on the ground with more than
200 of them by Caffrey. Dallas
gained 217 on the ground with Jeff
