DENMON Staff Correspondent ‘" The Dallas/Meyers game might well be defined as “Too Many and Too Big vs. “Not Enough and Too ‘Small’ because that’s what it was in the contest won by Meyers, 27-7, at Dallas last Saturday, spoiling Homecoming crowd. . The Mohawks’ starting lineup averaged from 178 to 230, most of them in or near the 190’s; the Mountaineers’ starting lineup from 140 to 205 (just one) and most of them in the 155 to 165 range. But Saturday, it was one of those games where it didn’t seem to matter to the Mountaineers. Despite their size, they played a better game than fans have seen them play all year. One former Dallas coach was heard to remark after the game that the coach doesn’t have to be disappointed in those kids; they’re coached better and played their hearts out more than any team I have seen in Dallas for years and years. That’s a big statement - one to make the kids and their coaches proud. A statement to remind par- on that field are ‘“‘only kids”. Meyers came in to the game with .a 6-1 record and put two touchdowns on the board early in the first Skaff with a 15 yard pass, then connected with Mike Schwab to give his team the ball on the Mountai- neer 41-yard line. Tony Caffrey car- ried it to the 33-yard line and, from there, Gregg Lott took Maffei’s pass going away and went in for a touchdown with 10:16 ‘on the clock. Daryl Boich kicked the extra point and Meyers went in front, 7-0. On the Mountaineers’ possession, they were unable to move the ball -and punted to the 50-yard line. Four plays later, the Mohawks were still in the same spot, due to a facemask penalty, their third 15-yard setback of the quarter. On the fourth down, Maffei hit Caffrey with a screen and Caffrey scampered down the side for a second Meyers score. With 5:02 on the clock, Charlie Arnone took the ball from the 46- yard line into the end zone for a Dallas touchdown. In the second quarter, Cadwa- lader passed to Van Gorder who took off for 44 yards before the Rangers took him down at the 16- yard line. The Knights took the ball to the 10-yard line in their next two plays from where Bill George car- ried it over for a second touchdown. The extra point was good and the Knights were in front, 14-0. On their possession, the Rangers were held by a strong Knight defense and had to punt from their own 34-yard line. Cadwalader went to the air and connected with Bill Bearde for 24 yards and Van Gorder took over on the next play taking the ball in from the 10-yard line for a score. The kick for extra point failed but the Knights closed out the half, 20-0. Lake-Lehman went scoreless in the third quarter, but with Boyle recovering a fumble at the Knights 40-yard line it set up the Knights longest drive of the game. Lake- Lehman used a running attack with the exception of one 16-yard hit and, after 11 plays, Van Gorder plunged over from the 1-yard line for the final Lake-Lehman score. The kick for the extra point failed but the Knights were in front, 26-0. against Meyers gave the Mountai- neers the ball on the 6-yard line. The Mountaineers went with a tackle eligible play and Matt Mihal made a first down run inside the seven, but Dallas lost the ball to the Mohawks when an official called the grounded ball that left Mihal’s hands a fumble and a Mohawk recovery. Before the half ended, there were three more turnovers between the two teams and a touchdown run by Meyers Schwab called back because of a Mohawk holding call. In the second half, the Mohawks recovered a Dallas fumble with 10:27 on the clock and, in four plays, The Rangers avoided a shutout when Les Harrison recovered a fumble on the Knights’ 21-yard line in the final quarter. They went inside the 5-yard line, but a motion penalty set them back to the 9-yard Hauling one in Caffrey took it in for a touchdown. The PAT failed and Meyers led 20-7. In the final period with 9:46 on the clock, Caffrey took a punt on the 3- yard line and ran 97 yards down- field for a touchdown. The kick for the extra point was good and the Mohawks led, 27-7. In the second half, the Mountai- neers moved the ball downfield sev- eral times, at least twice inside the 10-yard line, but the Meyers defense held the small Mountaineers. Meyers had nine first downs, Dallas had 13. Meyers gained 265 yards on the ground with more than 200 of them by Caffrey. Dallas gained 217 on the ground with Jeff line.
