    NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND
CLASS JAMES W. HADDLE III,
son of James W. Haddle Jr. of RD 1,
Dallas and Joyce Soska of RD 1,
West Pittston, is a crewmember
aboard the recently commissioned
guided missile cruiser USS York-
town, homeported in Norfolk, Va.
The ship was commissioned on
the Fourth of July in it’s namesake
city, Yorktown, Va. Approximately
8,000 people gathered for the Inde-
pendence Day ceremonies that offi-
cilly welcomed the ship into active
service.
The present Yorktown is the fifth
U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. It
is named for the historic Revolu-
tionary War Battle fought at York-
town, Va.
The ship is the second in the
Navy’s newest class of cruisers,
equipped with the Aegis Weapon
System, the most modern air
defense system in the world.
The Yorktown is 567 feet long and
has a crew of 360.

MISS DONNA A. GARBER,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William
Garber 83 James Street, Shaver-
town will enter the freshman class
at Jefferson Medical College of Phil-
adelphia in September.
Miss Garber is a graduate of
Dallas Area High School and was
graduated Magna Cum Laude with
a B.S. in Biology from Wilkes Col-
lege in May of this year.
Miss Garber was awarded honors
in Biology and the Sigma XI
Research Award for independent
research which she conducted on
behavior in Microtine Rodents. The
results of her research were
presented at the Eastern College
Science Conference at providence
College in Rhode Island.

During her four years at Wilkes,
Miss Barber received both the
National Merit Scholarship and the
Schub Memorial Scholarship. Miss
Garber also held the position of
chairperson of the Human Services
Committee and was active in stu-
dent government.

Mrs. Donald Jones, of Box 239-C,
R.D. 4, Shavertown, has been
awarded an academic scholarship
to begin his freshman year of
studies at King’s College.
Jones, a Lake Lehman graduate,
will pursue a degree in English.
Academic scholarships at King’s,
valued from $500 to $2,500, are
awarded competitively to applicants
in the top 20 percent of their high
school classes who have achieved a
combined score on the Scholastic
Aptitude Test of 1050 or more.
