NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS JAMES W. HADDLE III, son of James W. Haddle Jr. of RD 1, Dallas and Joyce Soska of RD 1, West Pittston, is a crewmember aboard the recently commissioned guided missile cruiser USS York- town, homeported in Norfolk, Va. The ship was commissioned on the Fourth of July in it’s namesake city, Yorktown, Va. Approximately 8,000 people gathered for the Inde- pendence Day ceremonies that offi- cilly welcomed the ship into active service. The present Yorktown is the fifth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. It is named for the historic Revolu- tionary War Battle fought at York- town, Va. The ship is the second in the Navy’s newest class of cruisers, equipped with the Aegis Weapon System, the most modern air defense system in the world. The Yorktown is 567 feet long and has a crew of 360. -0- MISS DONNA A. Miss Garber is a graduate of Dallas Area High School and was graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biology from Wilkes Col- lege in May of this year. Miss Garber was awarded honors in Biology and the Sigma XI Research Award for independent research which she conducted on behavior in Microtine Rodents.
