young team Wilkes College will field a young foot- ball team in 1984, although 33 lettermen return. Joining those lettermen will be head coach Bill Unsworth’s second full recruiting class, numbering close to 50 players. The Colonels’ strong point is expected to be the defensive front eight. Last year’s defensive line returns and only graduating captain, Rich Murray, is missing from the linebacker corp. The secondary is thin in numbers, but shows quality players in each position. Viewers ~ can expect the defense to be Wilkes’ strong suit. The team’s offense is expected to be much improved. The top three rushers from a year ago are back. Upperclass- men dominate the receiver group with three seniors and one junior returning. Among those returning is 1983 Most Valuable Player, Ed Mann, who had 39 receptions for 455 yards and four touch- downs. Three returning lettermen, Brad Scar- borough, Randy rice and Eric Reidinger, will be vying for the starting quarterback position. All three were starters in 1983 and all suffered through sidelining inju- ries. Preseason camp should determine the top signal-caller. Opening holes for the backs and allow- ing time for the quarterback to pass will be an offensive line strangthened by the return of three sophomores. New recruits, freshmen and transfers are expected to contend for starting roles, after they have learned the Colonel system. The team shows depth and better talent than in 1983. Back Mountain gridders at Wilkes Among the Back Mountain residents who will be suiting up in Wilkes College Colonel uniforms this season are: Dan Kolar, a 62”, 175-pound freshman kicker from Lake-Lehman; Dave Kon- opki, a 6’2”’, 200-pound freshman guard from Dallas; Joe Moffit, a 5’10”, 170- pound freshman guard from Lake- Lehman; and Marty Onzik, a 60”, 210- pound freshman defensive end from Lake-Lehman.
