Joe, at 155, came in fourth By CHARLOT M. DENMON ~ Dallas grapplers: lose # in final season match * |. Staff Correspondent Joseph and James Patts, juniors ' at Dallas Senior High School, are twin brothers and are the sons of Frank and Joan Patts of Orange, Franklin Township. Joe and Jim did not always look so much alike, but as they mature their likeness becomes stronger. Joe is the older by eight minutes’ and the two of them are the youngest of six children. They have three older brothers and an older sister, all of whom are married. Both boys are members of the high school varsity wrestling team, having begun their wrestling careers during their freshmen year. At that time, Jim wrestled 120 and Joe wrestled 138 lbs. In their fresh- man year, Jim's record was 19 wins, five losses and Joe’s was eight and eight. Last year, Jim wrestled varsity at 138 lbs. and ended the season with a 500 record. Joe wrestled on the junior varsity team, with the excep- tion of three meets, two of which he won. This season, the boys seemed to switch weight classes. Jim started at 145 Ibs. but moved up to 155, while Joe was at 155 lbs. and went down to 145. At 145, Jim placed fourth in the Berwick Tournament by default in the Governor Mifflin Tourney when he was injured in his third match. The twins became interested in wrestling out of sheer curiosity - they just wanted to find out what wrestling was all about. They enjoyed it because it was an individ- ual sport rather than a team effort. “We don’t care for team sports very much,” said Jim. “We like to compete as individuals, winning or losing on our own. We have a mat at home where we work out. We also do some weight lifting. “There’s a lot more to wrestling than participating in the meet,” he added. “There’s losing weight, con- ditioning, discipline, practice, and learning to appreciate the other members of the squad. When you go out on that mat in a meet, you're on your own. You make up your mind you're the one who is going to win or lose — no help from anyone else — so you'd better be ready.” The boys’ parents attend every meet and are enthusiastic about their sons’ achievement. It is evi- dent that they are very proud of the boys. The twins’ likenesses end on the wrestling mat, however, as the boys are not in ‘the same programs in school. With the PIAA ruling that four places in each weight class advance to Regional competition, there is a possibility that the entire Black Knights squad will advance. Lake-Lehman will get its toughest competition from Coughlin, a team it just lost to in the championship match for the Wyoming Valley Con- ference wrestling title Saturday night. Dallas, with its 8-5 season record, is also expected to score some points in Districts, as is Tunkhan- nock, which also sports an 8-5 sea- sonal slate. %: Hop Bottom, -. Penna. 18824
