RICHARDS Sports Columnist The Bloomsburg wrestling team, led by former Lake- Lehman champs ranked Penn State last week. Ricky and Rocky have had banner cam- paigns in their first season in th vastly improve Eastern. Wres tling League. Ricky is one off the top 118 poun : ders and was slated to meet two- time defending champ Carl DeStefanis. However, Coach Roger Sanders moved Ricky up to 126 pounds where he squared off with PSU’s Scott Webster. Ricky bowed to Webster, 19-11, suffering his first loop loss. Rocky wrestled at 134 pounds agaisnt two-time All-American Scott Lynch, who was making his first start since having knee sur- gery last month. Lynch is nor- mally a 126-pounder like rocky. Lynch had too much horse power for Rocky and romped, 16-4. It was Rocky's second defeat in the EWL. He bowed to defending champ Dan Foldesy, 6-5. With the Ninth Annual Eastern Wrestling League Championships this weekend at Millersville, Ricky and Rocky are expected to be back at their normal weights which is 118 and 126. The champions and runners- up, along with three wild cards will advance to the NCAA Tour- nament at the Meadowlands March 8 through 10. Both wres- tlers will have to be at peak form to qualify, but both will. v On the season Ricky is 21-2-1, while Rocky is 22-3. Both are candidates for the EWL Fresh- man of the Year Award which will be voted on by the coaches and a committee from the media after the NCAA Tournament. Coach Sanders told me last week, “Ricky and Rocky have done so much for our team over the course of the season. Their best wrestling is still ahead of them. Because of their dedica- tion, they’re going to get better and better.” — Coach Clarence 0zgo’s Mouuntaineers made it a clean sweep over Coach Rodger Bearde’s Lake-Lehman round- ballers this season winning last week in a close one. Mountai- neers getting consistency play from their starting five. It seems everyone has a role and perform- ing as a cohesive unit team concept thefirst priority. — Congratulations to Knights’ Bill Bearde on cracking 1,000 point mark. He’s a very unselfish performer and has been through- out his career. Being the coach’s son isn’t any piece of cake either. Bill’s awareness on the court is remarkable. — I tip my hat to the Lake- Lehman Booster Club on donat- ing the new scoreboard in memory of Jim Nicholas. it showed a lot of style. — Delighted to see Craig Rome wrestling so well for Coach Larry Schuler’s Big D team this season. Craig has worked awful- theoff season and is a dedicated youngster. He’s got a lot of his Uncle Ed’s competitive drive. he sported 12-0 record going into the weekend and has shown six foes the lights. — Another Dallas mat star with a heap of drive and desire is Mike Borton. You knew he’d be a winner on the mat, simply by the aggressive way he ran with the football. — My vote for schoolboy wres- tling coach of the year locally would go to Ed Ladamus of Lake-Lehman. He was in a tough situation replacing Shorty Hitch- cock and with all of the adversity surrounding the situation. Ed simply took the reins and did things his way and the wrestlers responded. — North Carolina and Ken- tucky, two of the favorites to capture the NCAA roundball crown by many, just seem to be lacking something in my book. I really don’t beliee either will win it all. — I’m still gathering info from collegiate coaches on the top recruits and how much of an impact they’ll have come next fall. It was amusing to read in the Centre Daily Times where St.Joe Paterno claimed it was an ‘off year in Pennsylvania and New Jersey’ this season, prompting Penn State to expand its recruit- ing elsewhere. However, several other coaches pointed out the Nittany Lions lost out in both states. According to the coaches’ early reports there was a lot of talent around plain and simple. St. Joe’s pet line is the talent was thin when they don’t go to Happy Valley. — Dante Wiley, the DB-QB from Jeannette, was considered in most circles as the premier player in Pennsylvania this year. He decided to attend Pitt. That makes the 11th time in the last 12 * is A
