    The Pennsylvania Department of
Aging recommends that you put a
gift at the top of this year’s Christ-
mas list that doesn’t cost a cent.
The gift is your visit to an older
person - a grandparent, a parent, or
an elder aunt or uncle - maybe even
an older friend.
This is the -time of year - the
holiday season - when people of all
ages are vulnerable to sadness or
loneliness. All the advertising they
see and hear about the holidays
makes them feel even worse. You
can make holidays happier, particu-
larly for older persons, just by
being with them. -
In the event you want to buy
Christmas gifts for older relatives
or friends, the Department suggests
that their special needs be taken
into account when developing shop-
ping lists.
The following gift ideas may be
helpful:
Clothing
change with age, thus making stan-
dard clothing sizes inappropriate for
many older persons.
clothes are desired, consider deep
colors so as to offset paler skin and
hair tones. Wrap-around styles and
clothes which are easy to fasten are
often preferred.
Kitchen items - Preparing food for
only oneself or a spouse can take
the fun out of cooking. Convenience
appliances and those which are
directed toward small meal serv-
ings can help maintain motivation
for proper diet (microwave ovens,
two-cup coffee pots, etc.) Cookbooks
for small families and special diet
recipes also are useful.
Physical fitness - Many older per-
sons are concerned about their
“health and want to stay in the best
physical condition possible. Pedom-
eters to measure distance walked,
light weights and special exercise
books are very good gift items for
active seniors. Devices to monitor
blood pressure and similar health
related items make unusual, but
welcome gifts for many.
Security items - Smoke detectors,
security alarms, timers for both
indoor and outdoor lights, dead bolts
for doors and other items which
promote secutiry and safety can
help ease concerns which trouble
numerous senior citizens.
Safety devices - For older persons
who are frail or experiencing cer-
tain physical problems, gifts such
as safety bars for the bathroom,
shower stools, telephone amplifiers
and magnifying glasses can be
extremely useful. These items can
sections of large drug stores or can
be ordered through a variety of
catalogs.
Miscellaneous items - If you wish
to give food as a gift, make sure
that all items are of use to the
recipient. Nuts may be difficult to
eat for a person with dentures,
Stationary with envelopes and
stamps or a box of greeting cards
would be appreciated by many older
persons. A newspaper or magazine
know the recipient would like to
receive makes an ideal gift.
persons who have,” through the
years, accumulated a vast supply of
neckties, scarfs and other tradi-
tional gift items. 7
