oT ii SS, Tull? The Furys Paczewski, Kendra Wilson, Jeff ®\\ilkes-Barre Fats By LEE L. RICHARDS Staff Correspondent My trip to Knoxville for the Ten- nessee-Pitt game was enjoyable and exciting. Since I'm partial to both the Vols and Panthers, I really didn’t get into rooting for one team or another. John Vozniak and Bill LaVigna made the jaunt with me. Bill’s son, Matt, is the former All-Stater from Crestwood and he made traveling team as a frosh. Vol trainer, Jim Kerin greeted us and made the necessary arrange- ments for our stay. Tim was opti- _mistic about the Vols’ chances. We @unked with the UT squad the night before the game. Coach Majors visited our room pFriday evening and we had an “opportunity to discuss football in general. He asked me for my appraisal of both teams. I felt Pitt would have five, maybe six, better players on the field than Tennessee. I gave the Vols an edge in the kicking game and at QB, while Pitt would rate an edge on defense. Pitt won the contest, 13-3, and it was punter Tony Recchia who really sparkled as he outperformed Vol A-A Jimmy Colquitt, nailing down a 46-plus average and consis- tently punted the Panthers out of trouble. Pitt was held without a first down until their eighth posession midway through third quarter. ; Most of pre-game hype favored Vols over Panthers by as much as two TDs. Jerry McCoin of Athlon told me before the game he expected Pitt to win by a touchdown. Coach Majors got a chuckle out of Sport Magazine selecting his Vols No. 1. Said Majors: “I'd say we're a bit overrated. J can think of a half dozen teams that warrant that rec- ognition more than we do.” Visited with Coach Andy Urbanic on the field prior to the game and he seemed quite confident the Pan- thers could handle things as long as they didn’t make any disasterous turnovers for the Vols to convert for easy TDs. We had a wild ride to the stadium as Coach Majors allowed us to follow the team buses. State troop- ers halted traffic on the interstate and we zipped right to the stadium weaving through throng of fans. We got to park right under the stadium. Vols defense played superbly and showed exceptional speed in getting to the ball. : After the game, Coach Majors said, “Our offense didn’t put points on the board when we 'had the GRAND RE-OPENING AT #4 Len Deleur, owner of Deleur Masonry’s "BACK TO BASICS”, shown here with the new ‘'HARMAN’’ combination stove. I was concerned coming in with Pitt’s size and strength. Coach Fazio has an out- standing group of athletes. We had a good effort from our defense, better than I anticipated.” CLIPBOARD NOTES: Big sur- prise in local schoolboy ranks with Wyoming Area and Coughlin tying, while Hanover upset GAR. Warrior Coach Paul Marranca told me that his team can control their own destiny and not chase the Crusad- ers..Won’t be at all surprised if Dallas dumps Hawkeyes. Coach Ron Rybak’s team appears to be getting some continuity. Spartan fans are aiready claiming this is the year! I've heard that before, too. Some real significant college tilts this week involving teams in the hunt for a national title: West Vir- ginia at Maryland; Ohio State at Oklahoma; Goergia at Clemson; Iowa at Penn State; Texas at Auburn. I like the home teams in all of the contests. Ned Hartman, ‘The Wizard of Odds’, is excited about the grid season and has his computer feed- ing me data. His top seven teams looked like this last week: 1- Nebraska, 2-North Carolina, 3-Flor- ida, 4-Arizona, 5-West Virginia, 6- Texas, 7-Oklahoma. QO v g CO-HCZmX By CHARLOT M.
