sophisticated machines exclusively
with science or science-related
courses. Wilkes College, a liberal
arts institution, will dispel that con-
cept beginning in the fall, when the
newly acquired Data General MV-
1000 time-sharing computer system
will be used in academic programs
in both the sciences and the humani-
ties.
The computer has a capacity of
eight million characters of memory,
602 million characters of disc stor-
age, a magnetic tape unit, and a 300
line-per-minute printer. It has the
capability of performing over seven
million simple arithmetic operations
per second and and of reading or
writing data on disc storage units at
the rate of 14 million characters per
second. ,
The program, once ‘fully devel-
oped and in place, will be unique in
the area, and one of the most
important aspects of the MV-1000 is
that it will allow Wilkes to put in
place a new degree in software
engineering and eventually a
master’s program in engineering.
