Wilkes College, a liberal arts institution, will dispel that con- cept beginning in the fall, when the newly acquired Data General MV- 1000 time-sharing computer system will be used in academic programs in both the sciences and the humani- ties. The computer has a capacity of eight million characters of memory, 602 million characters of disc stor- age, a magnetic tape unit, and a 300 line-per-minute printer. It has the capability of performing over seven million simple arithmetic operations per second and and of reading or writing data on disc storage units at the rate of 14 million characters per second. , The program, once ‘fully devel- oped and in place, will be unique in the area, and one of the most important aspects of the MV-1000 is that it will allow Wilkes to put in place a new degree in software engineering and eventually a master’s program in engineering.
