Even though the game between the San Diego Padres and the Phillies was rained out, the Scouts and their friends had a great time. Exercises were held at the Post 644 Home on Shoemaker Streek and then at the Denison St. Cemetery. Commander David Dzurek was master of ceremonies. The wreath was placed on the Unknown Soldiers grave by Mrs. George Haduch of the Gold Star Mothers and by Vincent Dennis Sr. of the CWV Post 1601. Commissioner Edward Brominski gave the main talk at the Memorial Day exercises. Although the day was threatening, a nice size crowd attended. Rev. Edward Soko- lowski, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish where the Mass was held at 9 a.m., gave invocation and bene- diction at the cemetery. The Firing Squad under Joseph Asklar Sr. did another fine job along with Phil Swank as the bugler who played the Star Span- gled Banner. David Dzurek is Com- mander of Post 644 and Leon Ziomek is Com- mander of Post 1601. Thomas Beky read names of the members of Post 644 who passed away this year. Socky said his crew loads of debris from creeks throughout the bor- ough. He said that it took a long time to get these projects done and now they are being damaged. He and the mayor said that it isn’t only one part of town but all over. The town is beautiful - why not keep it that way? Anyone caught, young and old alike, will be punished. -0- The Swoyersville Annual Golf Open Tourney will be held Sunday, June 26 at the Happy Valley Golf Course in Exeter. Co- chairmen Dick Evanoski and Turp Kovalick said there are many applicants and this should be one of the biggest ever. Any resi- dent or former resident of Swoyersville is eligible. Magistrate Andrew Barilla is the favorite with Cactus Stelma challenging him. -0- The Clover Club of Swoyersville is having its Annuat Baseball Bus Trip .to Yankee Stadium on Sunday, July 24 to see the game between the Yanks and Kansas City Royals. Councilman Ron Alunni, chairman of the fire departments, announced that Maltby Hose Co. had three fire alarms for the month of ‘May and No. 2 Hose Co. had six. Councilman Joe Marcin, chairman of the police department, announced that $500 was collected in fines and violation for May. He also said that the Police Department had 216 citizen reports. He also made a motion to pay the part-time patrolmen and school crossing guards. All bills were paid. Council chairman Michael Emershaw told ing that patrolman Joseph Wolensky and Chief Wil- liam Dorman have organ- ized a Neighborhood Crime Watch. He said that between 35 to 40 residents were at the first meeting. He asks more residents to join because this will help the borough out in may ways. Liaison officer gave a report that 25 building per- mits for the month of May totaled $618 in permit fees and construction total of $88,343. Councilman Jim Pugh, chairman of the street departments, asked bor- ough coordinator Michael Simko about the situation in Birch Village on the tree lawns that weren't accepted by council. Simko said that the con- tractor, Addy Construc- tion, was on the job that morning. Simko also said that bids for 10 streets in the first ward, Maltby sec- tion will be awarded on June 16 and 30 days later work will begin on fixing and repairing them. Simko also read two res- olutions in place of Solici- tor Atty. H was in an unfortunate accident last year with his brother Bernie while taking a tire off a car and has had his right hand in a cast since. He hopes the fianl cast is off in about eight weeks which will put him in good shape for the dart league. Everyone wishes him well. 0: Luzerne lost two of its citizens this past week. Kenneth Hottinstein and Mrs. Helen Kurpis of Miller St. Ken was the former football and base- ball coach of Luzerne High School. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ned- elak of 20 McHale St., Swoyersville will celebrate their 60th wedding anni- versary Monday. They were married on June 20, 1923 by the late Rev. Jacob Drapiewski at St. Mary’s Church in Swoyersville. ? Mrs. Nedelak is the former Theresa Harzinski of Swoyersville. Mr. Nede- lak is also a Swoyersville native. Their attendants were Jane Harzinski Clapps and John Nedelak. The Nedelaks are the parents of three daugh- ters, Mrs. Frank (Vir- ginia) Stack; Mrs. John (Sylvia) Lykon and Mrs. Paul (Nancy) Pasek, all of Swoyersville. They also have seven grandchildren, y Mark Stack, Sandra Ann Lykon Sprague, Wayne and Bruce Lykon, Paul Jr., Monica and Peter Pasek. They also have eight great-grandchildren.
