six-week Geriatric Nursing
Assistant Program at Luz-
erne County Community
College.
The program is coordi-
nated by Marie Barbose,
Shavertown and is offered
through the school’s Con-
tinuing Education Depart-
ment. It is funded with a
grant from the Pennsyl-
vania Department of Edu-
cation’s Vocational Educa-
tion Department.
The program, which was
developed in cooperation
with and the support of
Interfaith Friends Inc., is
designed to teach individ-
ual students the skills nec-
essary to gain employment

John R. Murphy, dean of
student affairs at the
Wilkes-Barre campus of
the Pennsylvania State
University, participated in
a panel presentation at the
annual conference of the
National Association of
Student Personnel Admin-
istrators held recently in
Toronto, Canada.
The presentation, enti-
tled ‘Developing a Pro-
gram for Personal and
Professional Vitality: For
Yourself and Your Staffs,”
was first presented as an
internal program for Penn
State student personnel
administrators to help
develop individual and col-
lective plans of action for

avoiding stress and pre-
venting burnout. Since
then, it has been presented
at other professional meet-
ings, including the Penn-
sylvania personnel and
Guidance Association, a
group of high school and
college guidance counse-
lors, which met in Lancas-
ter.
Murphy has been dean
of student affairs at the
Penn State-Wilkes-Barre
campus since 1967. Before
then, he was assistant to
the dean of student affairs
at Penn State’s Ogontz
campus.
He received his B.S.
degree in political science
from Marietta College in
1963 and his M.S. degree in
counseling from the Uni-
versity of Bridgeport in
1966.
He resides in Dallas with
his wife, Shawn, and
daughters, Kathleen, a
Penn State-Wilkes-Barre
student, Jennifer, and
Brennan.

When Gesink joined the
Penn State-Wilkes-Barre
faculty in 1975 as assistant
professor of engineering,
hé developed an associate
degree program in
biomedical equipment
technology. To this date,
more than 100 students
have received the asso-
ciate degree.
Gesink’s prior profes-
sional experience includes
two years as a research
health scientist at the Vet-
erans Administration Hos-
pital, Miami, Fla.
Born in Denver, Colo.
Gesink spent his high
school years in Michigan
and attended the Univer-
sity of Michigan where he
received a B.S. in mechan-
icl engineering, an M.S. in
Bioengineering and in
electrical engineering, and
his Ph.D. in bioengineer-
ing. He and his wife,
Dorian, reside in Dallas
with their three children.

In his program, Mr.
Palmer chose four stu-
dents from the audience
and had them test their
amount of energy.
As a group, the chil-
drens’ reaction was great
interest. The Lake-Noxen
