Kathryn Gregory, a
science teacher at Lake-
Lehman Junior-Senior
High School, recently
captured a .$3,500 grant
from the state Depart-
ment of Education.
This grant, one of 194
awarded throughout the
state, enables Lake-
Lehman to acquire a
highly sophisticated tele-
“scope, which will be used
to enhance various
studies of sky
phenomenon. Ms.
Gregory’s proposal was
selected from 1,206 sub-
mitted by various
teachers throughout the
Commonwealth.
In addition to the tele-
scope, the grant will allow
for the provision of photo-
graphic facilities to be
used in conjunction with
it. This combination of
technology will allow
astronomy students to
photograph sky pheno-
menon and use the
developed photographs
for intensive individual
and group study.
Ms. Gregory, the
recipient of Bachelor and
Masters degrees from
Penn State University,
has had a distinguished
teaching career, in-

presented scientific
papers at conventions of
the National Science
Association,
held in Dallas, Texas and
Cincinnati. She is a
member of the adjunct
faculty at Penn State at

school experience in-
cludes service at
Wyoming Valley West.
Her intense interest in
natural science led Ms.
Gregory to a recent
sabbatical leave. While on
leave she visited the
volcanoes of Hawaii, the
Rocky Mountains, the
deserts of the southwest
and the Everglades of
Florida. All of these
travels were keyed to
wilderness study and
were undertaken in
conjunction with the
Smithsonian Institution.
James L. Nicholas,
principal of Lake-
Lehman, praised Ms.
Gregory’s efforts: “In
every sense of the word
Ms. Gregory is a master
teacher. She is totally
dedicated, utterly
professional and provides
enormous motivation to
her students. She makes
science a fascinating
experience but, more than
that, she is a concerned
and caring teacher.”
