RICHARDS Former Lake-Lehman state mat champions, Ricky tournament and did very well for not having any serious competition in over a year. The 1981 PIAA champions enrolled at Bloomsburg State this fall much to the delight of Coach Roger San- ders. ‘Bloomsburg competes in the rugged Eastern Wrestling League. and Rocky on our team. They’re red-shirting this year and should be in our lineup next season as we lose some people at their weight classes. : “I was somewhat surprised when I learned they were coming to Bloomsburg. They've been very good in the wrestling room thus far and have demonstrated the ability to really help our team in the future. Both are tough, hardnosed youngsters.” In the Wilkes Open both advanced to the semi-finals at 126 pounds only to drop decisions to more experienced wrestlers. Wilkes’ Kris Rowlette topped Rocky, 6-zip, while Ricky bowed to Lehigh’s nationally ranked Rich Santoro, a fifth year senior. However, I was particularly impressed with the aggressiveness on the part of both youngsters. They went after their opponents and didn’t back off. It was simply a case of the Bonomos lacking the mat savvy. About the bouts Coach Sanders told me, “I'll tell you what, the Bonomos are going to be two very tough customers in a year or so. They come to wrestle and they don’t care who the opponent is.” Sanders also made mention that both are doing well in the classroom. CLIPBOARD NOTES: The year 1982 will go down in the record books as the year several runnersup in their respective sport finally became champions. In basket- ball Dean Smith’s North Carolina team finally won an NCAA crown. The second bridesmaid John Reese of Wilkes saw his wrestlers emerge with the Wilkes Open title. Last but not least, St. Joe Paterno’s Penn State foot- ball team won the mythical grid crown. Amen! --Entering the bowl games here’s the way my Super Seven looked: 1--Pen State, 2-Nebraska, 3-Georgia, 4- UCLA, 6-Pitt, 7-Clemson. My final Super Seven for 1982 is as follows: 1-Penn State-Clearly the best of the lot. 2-Nebraska-Still lacking on pass defense. 3-UCLA-Outstanding collection of athletes. 4-SMU-Fine team that knows how to win. 5- Hershel Walker--Couldn’t beat the four above. 6- Washington-Huskies have talent. 7-Clemson-Beast of rather ordinary group. --Penn State clearly was superior to Georgia in just LEWIS-DUNCAN SKI JACKETS PANTS 20 Off SUITS 50% © OFF SKI VESTS sean SWEATERS 50% OFF | a CRUISE WEAR All Cross Country © 30 5 OFF Ski Equipment Swallow Ski Package Swallow CM 180. .... s+... vs $149.99 Tyrolia 160 W/Brake ............ 85.00 Barrecrafter Pole’, ... ... iv... ou... 11.95 Mounting uc... 0G aise as ae 10.00 1256.94 ue 31497 "HOURS: Mon. Over the season this was the most improved group of blockers I've seen and I sure hope they get the recognition deserved. --Best victory in the bowls was Air Force whipping Vanderbilt. According to my southern sources, Vandy told the Hall of Fame selection committee it wouldn’t accept invite if it had to play Miami. Reason was quite simple, Miami would have throttled them, too. But the Air Force behind its brilliant option QB did a number of the favorites. Received my ballot last week from the “Football Writers Association of America and it’s always amusing to read the names for coach of the year in college foot- ball. A total of 51 coaches were listed. That’s absurd! Here’s a sample of those mentioned: Bear Bryant, Earl Bruce, Lavell Edwards, Foge Fazio, Lou Holtz, Charley Pell, John Robinson, Bo Schembechler and Barry Switzer. Heck, these guys would be the first to tell you they don’t deserve consideration. Meanwhile, those coaches I'm giving serious .con- sideration to; Jerry Berndt of Penn; Pat Dye of Auburn; Ken Hatfield of Air Force; Joe Kapp of California; Bob Ross of Maryland and last but not least, the Penn State Staff. I’ve always believed head coaches get too much recognition. I've always believed a head coach is only as strong as his staff. The recruiting, on the field coaching and game to game preparation is done by the assistant. ~-Eastern football slipped back to ordinary status in the bowls. Boston College, West Virginia, Pitt and Penn State went bowling, and only the Nittany Lions came in the polls but sure didn’t perform to expectations. I had predicted all three to go down in defeat. PSU did save some face. PAC 10 sent three teams to the bowls and all three triumphed. Big 10 was 3-2, the ACC split 1-1, SWC was 2-1, while the SEC took it on the chin the Worst. Of the seven teams in bowls only the state of Alabama came away with narrow trimphs. The Tide and Auburn won, while LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Florida bowed in close games by a TD .or less. Pitt? I gotta believe the Panthers never really improved their overall ability from the ’81 season. Once again there was too much hype in the pre-season. Too, maybe some of the so-called stars were a bit overrated. ~Why doesn’t the NFL change its name to the No Fumble League? Compared to five years ago, it’s a com- pletely different style of game. You can’t hit the QB, but play touch football. Offensive linemen can push, shove and hold off the defenders. So many players can’t hang on to the football that they've taken away the fumble. The ground can’t cause a fumble? What gets me lately is the spots by the stripe shirts of the ball. From all indica- of outcomes. Another name worth considering is the National Flag Legue. The NFL is purely entertainment and nothing else to me.
