THE DALLAS POST, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18, 1982 BY NANCY KOZEM- CHAK The story of Frances Slocum lives in all the hearts of those that know about her, those who have a spark of romance left in their souls. The abduction of this little girl and the unfolding tale of her life among the Indians cannot help but capture the imagination of anyone who has even the slightest interest in the beginning of our country and the struggles it entailed. It is therefore most fitting that a State Park be named for this famous little girl, and the cave where she spent her first night as hostage be enclosed within its boundaries. Frances Slocum died at the age of 74 with a large silver cross around her neck. Her grave is known as ‘‘God’s Acre’’. A memorial was placed at the Wyoming Historical Society in 1906 and now, she will live in still another place in Wyoming Valley, the Frances Slocum State Park in Carverton. A flood control project was needed to both preserve water and keep it from spilling over during the spring thaws. For one week, from August 18-22, the ‘Music Box Dinner Playhouse in Swoyersville will present a musical play especially for children entitled, “Don’t Count Your Chickens Until They Cry Wolf.”’ This play, by Carol Pearson, with music by J.A.C. Redford, is a humorous interweaving of Aesop’s fables which will appeal to children of all ages. Cast members include Frank ‘Marino, E.T. Goman, Nanci Krakosky, Beverly Brennan, Adele Tavella, TP. Doyle and Sherrie Keir. The play is directed by Adele Ann Tavella, with musical direction by Kelly Bishop and choreography by Kevin Costley. Performances will be theatre only (no meal), and will have a special admission price of $3 per person. Performance times will be 2 p.m. daily (Wednesday through Sunday) with an | ad- ditional 7 p.m. per- formance on Saturday, Aug. 21. Frances Slocum State Park is located in Kingston Township, Luzerne County, with a mailing address . of Wyoming, Pa. It has a 165- acre lake which is its center of interest. The lake provides fishing and boating with boat rentals, boat mooring and laun- ching. All qualified non- powered boats and registered boats with electric motors are allowed on the lake. In the winter time, the lake is available for ice fishing and ice skating. There are playfields and many areas available for family or group pic- nicing. The park acreage of hiking trails. A beautiful swimming pool is available with a snack bar concession at the pool. The winter time finds areas marked off for sledding and there is 7 miles for snowmobiling.
