Maltby Colliery "PAGE FIFTEEN The former Maltby Colliery and Breaker was located between Owen and Dennison Streets on the back road in Swoyers- ville. This was one of the best kept breaker and colliery yards around these parts in the late twenties and early thir- ties. Mules and the steam shovel can be seen in the photo. St. Patrick’s Day was a big day at the colliery as the workers would bring up the mules from the mines. They painted the mules green for the celebration. The small lokies are missing from this photo but the following informa- tion was given by the well known photographer and historian of Swoyersville, ul Bieley from the “w“Atlas of Luzerne County, Pa.,” from actual Sur- veys of D.G. Beers, 1873, Engineers of Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties. Maltby Mines through Lackawanna Ave., along the creek where Joh Dzurek lives on Townend Ave., over Noyes Ave. which was then Walnut St., going over Wade St. to Park Ave. across Maltby Ave. to the Bloomsburg- Lackawanna Railroad between Owen and Dennison Streets in Forty Fort. The coal was hauled from the Maltby Mines to the Maltby breaker. The coal was mined at the Maltby Mines which was the present breaker until its demolition. Before it Coal Company, it was Houghton and Wilmer Coal Co. and later was taken over by C.S. Maltby, Pioneeer and it was called Maltyb Mines. After a few years, the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. and it became the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. Preparations were made to make one breaker. Workings were then abandoned on Wyoming Ave. and the lokie tracks. After the breaker was built, it went back to the old name of Maltby Colliery, which was then the largest in the Anthracite Region. ‘Farther north, still on the Back Road, at a point of Kozlek’s Sand Pit was years. MR. AND MRS. RAYMOND PODSKOCH of 1031 Main Street, Swoyersville will cele- brate their 25th wedding anniversary this coming Tuesday. They were married on June 1, 1957 by Rev. Clement J. Pod- skoch, CFC, cousin of Mr. Podskoch, at St. John’s Church in Luzerne. Mrs. Podskoch is the former Bernardine late Mr. and Mrs. John Spirko of Swoyersville. Podskoch is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Pod- skoch, also of Swoyer- sville. Their attendants were Anita Spirko Rakus, Ralph Kudela, Dolores Spirko Saduski, Edward Begosh, Patricia Sobeck Nowicki, Raymond Chimock, Rose Cocci Uter and Robert O’Donnell. Starosta and Starosti were Mary Scripp and Martin Podskoch Jr. The Podskoches are the parents of three children, Margaret who was recently married to Thomas Semanek Jr. on May 22; Marlene and Raymond Jr. Mr. Podskoch is a vice president of the United Penn Bank and is the West Side Regional manager which takes in Kingston, Forty Fort and Dallas Branches. -0- . Here the coal was dumped from a tipple into a gondola, (coal car) and brought to Maltby Colliery. The excess Wetmoreland Colliery in West Wyoming located off Fairview St. The ad- ditional coal from Westmoreland Colliery was sent to the Exeter Colliery located on Penn Street. The three collieries, Maltby, Fuller Shaft and Boy Scout Troop 144, Rawhide Patrol, spon- sored by St. Mary's Church, Swoyersville attended the Spring Camporee at Moon Lake sponsored by Mountain Pathfinder District, Penns Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of‘ America. Scouts campout in tents and increase their camping skills and scouting knowledge in preparation for summer camp at Camp Acahela. Rawhide Patrol members are the youngest scouts in Troop 144. Robert Coniglio is Senior Patrol Leader, Michael Hanusin is Patrol Leader, and David Sch- wenk is Assistant Patrol Leader. Other scouts participating were Rocky Jones, Robert Krull and James Brennan. Scout- master is Russ Jones and Scouting Coordinator is Bill Coniglio. Rawhide Patrol par- ticipated in eight compe- titive events and were awarded first place for first aid skills; first place for trail signs and second place for knot tying. They also received a partici- pation award and a winning: unit award for Scout Enrollment in 1981. Nineteen patrols com- peted in the event. Rawhide Patrol also joined in a Good-Turn Conservation Project for Moon Lake Park. Troop 144 welcomes any boy at least 11-years-old or in fifth grade who wants to become a boy scout. Meetings are held each Monday at 7 p,.m. at St. Mary’s Church Hall on Shoemaker Street, Swoyersville. Westmoreland supervised by George F. Miller, pioneer mining engineer and later taken over by his son, Jacob Miller, who now resides with his daughter and son- in-law. Arlene and Andy Gomba on Maltby Ave., Swoyersville. One oddity is that the senior Miller was never given any recognition for having the cleanest workings at his collieries.
