TP ES J REET a EE TRE RETR Dallas Mountaineers ran their season record to: 3-0, Friday night, as they team 12-7 in the pouring rain, The strong Mountaineer defense kept the Spartans from gaining yardage and sacked their young quarterback five times. “Qur offense has put it together, too,”” said Dallas head coach Ron Rybak. “We lost our center and guards from last = season through graduation and we have had to do some ex- perimenting at ‘those positions. We now have Yakabovicz at center and Rollman and John Kern at guard positions. They are doing the job and each game they're getting better. ‘Federici, Bordley and Lewis, coupled with our defense did a superb job against Valley West. It’s difficult to single out one player. We’ve got a group of kids who play as a team. No single one is looking for all the glory and it’s paying off in our kids attitude. “Our defense has only given up one touchdown in our three games. We have Kurt Goeringer, Bordley, Lewis and D. Bolton in our secondary and our defensive front = of Dukinas, Pat Kern, Mike Kern and Clemson are playing heads up, superb ball. Adding to the team effort are my linebackers Andy Manusky, Paul Walsh and Rollman. They are an awesome team. “Federucu abd Bordley are leading our offense but our other backs are good and can run the ball.” Bordley didn’t carry the ball in the first quarter but, ‘in the downpour he picked up yardage on four of the first five plays for 25 yards. The Moun- taineers held the Spartans throughout the first half while they had two op- portunities to score, one on Lewis’ pass to Federici which he dropped and the other when they were unable to score from the Spartans 27 yard line. Lewis attempted a 44- yard field goal which fell short. With only 3:16 remaining in the first half, the Mountaineers started their 10-play scoring drive. Bordley carried the ball for good yardage from the Dallas 46, then a pass in- terference penalty and a roughing the kicker call move the ball to the Spartans 34 yard line. On the eighth play, Ray Piekanski who held it at the Spartans three yard line. With 15 seconds left in the half, Fecerici hit Bordley in the end zone for the first score of the game. Lewis’ kick for the PAT failed. In the opening of the third quarter, Federici went around end on a keeper for a gain of 44 yards, to the Spartans’ 23 yard line. Two plays later he went left then cut back to the middle on a keeper to go into the end zone for a second Mountaineer score. The try for extra point failed on a bad snap from center. The wet field prevented either team’s offense from moving well in the third quarter. Valley West scored in the third quarter when the Spartans recovered a Mountaineer fumble. Unable to move the ball for a first down the ball turned over to Dallas. Dallas was forced to: punt, ‘which was blocked by Valley West's Sam Brtorilla on the Moun- taineers 17 yard line. On third and four, Spartan Ray Ripa went off right tackle into’ the end zone for the Spartans only score. Mark McGrane’s kick for the extra point led 12-7. In the fourth’ quarter Kurt = Goeringer in- tercepted a Spartan pass with 9:37 remaining. the Spartans had one more chance to score when Baur completed a 37-yard pass to Natishan. Consecutive sacks by Dave Bolton and Pat Kern slowed down the Spartans then Bordley intercepted Baur’s pass to give the Mounts ‘the ball. We need him on defense. We need him for have been up for our past three games, three tough ones. Most sports ‘writers are picking Dallas to win. “I hope our kids don’t think it’s going to be an easy game for them. The Argents aren’t that bad a ball team. Last year our PAGE ELEVEN easy and Hoban won. I hope we don’t repeat that situation this year. “It's the play on the field that 'counts:-not Those kids are hungry for a win. A lot of this game is mental and our kids have XXRRRERX x punt returns and kickoffs and I go to him in critical situations. But we can’t afford to have him hurt. He's a great athlete'and a team player. He’s happy with what he’s doing. “Norm had a great game against the Spar- tans. On offense he had a run back on a punt return and gained good yardage. On defense he had three interceptions, and a run back which resulted in a touchdown. We don’t want him to get hurt because everyone is playing on him.” “My concern now is Bishop Hoban. The kids got to think win this week. SPECIAL BATTERY SALE!
