Sr. Mary Celestine McHale, former provincial administrator of the Sisters of Mercy, Scranton Province, and first active president of College Misericordia expired on Dec. 25, at Nesbitt Hospital after a long illness. Born in Hazleton, in 1897, Josephine McHale was trained as a teacher College. She received her bachelor’s degree from College Misericordia, her master of arts degree from Villanova Univer- sity, and earned a PhD. in education from Fordham Before en- tering the Sisters of Mercy she taught for six years in the Wilkes-Barre Public Schools. After making her profession of vows in 1927 she taught and served as principal in the Catholic Schools in the faculty of THE DALLAS POST, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1980 provincial administrator, a position which she held for six yeras. Shortly thereafter she became the first active president of College Misericordia and remained in that post for seven years. With progress as her aim, she succeeded in increasing the college enrollment by 300 percent; opened educational clinics; inaugurated a graduate program in cooperation with the University of visitor at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. Several members of the Jaycees helped to decorate the tree and visited with the residents. Cub Scout Pack 155 of the Trucksville United Methodist Church also received a tree donated by the Jaycees which they set up and decorated at the Dallas Motel. The tree was decorated with all handmade ornaments.
