PAGE TWENTY FOUR WINNER--Clinton Mercer of Shavertown was the 11- year-old winner in the Local Pitch, Hit & Run Com- petition held July 12. This event was the first stage in the national Pitch, Hit & Run Competition. Clinton excelled in the three key Pitch, Hit & Run skills: pitching for accuracy, hitting for distance and running against the clock to achieve the highest combined score of all youngsters in the 11 year old age group. Clint is a student at Dallas Intermediate School and played ball for the Back Mountain Orioles this season. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Michaels, Shavertown. Local awards given to the winners of different age groups were a 1st place medal and a ball and glove. All participants \ received a Pitch, Hit and Run T-shirt plus Courtesy coupons from Burger King. WYZZ | FRIDAY, JULY 7:30 p.m. Genetti Lycoming 25 WILKES-BARRE FATS by Lee L. Richards CLIPBOARD NOTES: Players arrived in Wilkes-Barre Sunday for Saturday's PIAA Big 33 grid classic. Looking at some of the East's players Sunday evening there's some talented personnel on that unit. Ditto for the West contingent. Meyers Coach Mick Gorham has done a lot of prépara- tion for this game and is extremely proud of the fact that the game will be played in his stadium. It's no secret the Mohawks have facilities second to none and it has been through the efforts of Gorham and his staff. Meanwhile, there'll be a bunch of collegiate coaches milling around the crowd Saturday night. Gib Romaine of Maryland has already informed me he'll be here and wants to play a quick round of golf at Irem. I received a phone call from pal John Jules of Ten- nessee and he’s going to be on hand. Vols signed two players that will play for the West. Despite what you've been reading in the local papers, all of the best players aren’t going to Penn State. Pitt will have a heap of stellar performers in QB Tom Flynn, RB Gary Tammaro and WR Jeff Casper to mention a few. QBs Scott Campbell, Purdue, and Steve Bono, UCLA, are top-shelf prospects. Four of our Eastern Eleven Elite are in the game. They're Bono, LB Steve Sefter, PSU, and guard Ron Solt of Coughlin ticketed for Maryland. Pitt's Marc Bailey is going to carry the mail for the East. Perhaps one of the most underrated youngsters inthe game is Lendell Jones of Easton who's also joing the Terps. He's a player with exceptional ability and a lot of schools got in the recruiting game late on him. While I've never been a fan of former PIAA whip Charlie McCullough, it was interesting to read Sunday where the State Justice Department is still conducting an investigation in some of the goings on. McCullough resigned under fire, despite what you may have read from his local side-kicks. Seems the law in Harrisburg was concerned about charges of conflict of interest, mismanagement and financial excess. He allegedly used the PIAA car for a little trip to Florida and his expenses for running a clinic in New Jersey are only a couple of the topics. He always went first class when he visitd local pubs! I'd like to see the state big shots look into the funds stashed by individual districts through out the state. Eventually, I'd guess the reps in the capitol are going to take over the whole show. Maybe the athletes will be treated fairly and not nickel and dimed. Would believe each school must pay an entry fee for a = r to compete in the district championships? Hogwash! Frank Wilding canned a wedge shot on the par five fourth hole at Irem Temple C.C. Saturday for an eagle three. He said it was one of the best shots he’s hit in a while! Tip of the hat to Jack Birnstock for seeing that Irem’s greens are getting watered every evening. Boy do we need rain and pronto! | Lou Saban’s abrupt departure from West Point doesn’t surprise me in the least. He's a tough man. , When he accepted the grid post certain promises were made by the Brass. They reneged! Coach Saban laid his cards on the table last Friday. He told them what had to be done to restore the Army football program to a level where they could be competitive. He was always candid. They're living in the 1940s and can't accept the truth. It wasn’t the first time Saban out- lined his proposals, only to fall on deaf ears. So he bailed out. His actions were justified according to several most reliable sources. I happened to believe he was a solid coach and an honest individual. Army's whole athletic program is in serious trouble! I watched with interest Saturday the Duran-Leonard rounds and the 11th, I don’t know where he won the fight. I read several different accounts after the fight by some solid boxing scribes. They even indicated Duran wasn’t a clear-out victor. Howie C. mentioned several times how the referee allowed Duran to maul and muscle inside. He was too slow in breaking the fighters. On the other hand, Leonard lost his own fight. He didn’t They'll fight again. Leonard will win the next one if it's not in Duran’s backyard. Total of three or four points was the difference.
